5 things I wish more people knew before starting Pilates 💚
1. Get to know your body on the mat as well as on other equipment.
Here you will learn SO much about your body… your own strength, mobility and control. Building the proper foundations will support you on the equipment. Never under estimate the power of body weight movement done the right way!
2. You don’t need to be flexible.
No you do not! Please don’t compare yourself to others or what you see on social media! A lot of the extreme flexibility we see on social media can come down to genetics/anatomy as well as consistent practise. Being flexible isn’t what makes you “good” at Pilates. There are also so many cooler things you’ll develop over flexibility - like confidence, awareness, mobility and strength! In turn your flexibility will probably improve too!
3. Invest in instructors who have invested in their education.
Not every Pilates class or instructor will offer the same experience. Substance over style! Do a little research into who you’re learning from, their training and whether their approach aligns with your goals. A knowledgeable instructor will help you to understand your body and get you real results.
4. Don’t be afraid to work in bare feet.
There is so much value in allowing your feet to move freely, feel the floor/equipment, articulate and work naturally. Your feet are part of the movement too and will give you so much feedback. If your studio doesn’t require socks GET THOSE TOOTSIES OUT!
5. Pilates does not have to look pretty or perfect.
You will shake. You might wobble…You might even lose your balance or find some movement really awkward and that’s okay!!! Pilates is about learning your body, trying again, developing and building connections. One day can feel totally different to the next even after years of practise! Remember, Pilates is a practice, not a performance!
