DAY 13 — CAN’T HOP? MODIFY THE MOVEMENT.

In today’s video, I’m working on a movement where I hop out in the transverse plane and land on one foot, with the hip in external rotation.

It’s a challenging movement that requires balance, coordination, strength and control.

But what if you’re experiencing hip pain or you’re not ready for the impact of hopping?

You don’t necessarily have to give up on the movement.

Instead, we can modify it.

Rather than hopping, simply step out with one foot and allow the hip to move into external rotation.

You reduce the impact while still practising the movement pattern.

This is something I believe strongly in:

Exercise doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

There is usually a way to make an exercise easier, build your confidence and gradually progress when your body is ready.

Your starting point might be a step.

Eventually, it might become a hop.

Meet your body where it is today — then work towards where you want it to be. 💪

If you’re experiencing pain, keep the movement within a comfortable range and seek appropriate professional advice if you’re unsure whether an exercise is suitable for you.

🔥 61 YEARS OLD. 30+ INCH BOX JUMP.

The box itself is 24 inches… but I put it on top of a step to make it 30+ inches.

Why?

Because I like to challenge myself and keep developing my power, coordination, balance and confidence.

Getting older doesn’t mean we should stop challenging our bodies.

Of course, the goal isn’t for everyone to jump onto a 30-inch box! 😅

The goal is to find the right level of challenge for you and keep progressing.

Strength isn’t just about how much you can lift.

It’s about staying strong, capable and independent so you can keep doing the things you enjoy.

Now the question is…

Can I go higher? 🤔🔥

WE’RE NOT JUST TRAINING FOR TODAY

This lovely couple are now in their 5th week of training with me.

They’re around my age and, before starting with me, they had never done strength training before.

When we started, I wanted to make one thing very clear:

Strength training at our age isn’t just about trying to look good.

Yes, you may become a little more toned.

Yes, you may improve your posture.

But that’s not the main reason I want people to strength train.

We’re preparing ourselves for what is coming.

As we get older, being strong and physically capable can make a huge difference to how independently we live our lives.

We want to be able to carry our shopping.

Get up from a chair.

Climb stairs.

Lift our luggage.

Travel.

Play with our grandchildren.

And continue doing the things that make life enjoyable.

We can’t predict exactly what the future will bring.

But we can prepare our bodies for it.

That’s why I love this saying:

“We want to add years to our lives and life to our years.” ❤️

It’s never too late to start building strength.

You don’t have to be fit before you begin.

You just have to begin.

💪 61 YEARS OLD… AND STILL DOING PULL-UPS!

Getting older doesn’t mean you have to stop challenging yourself.

I still train movements like pull-ups because I want to maintain strength, muscle and upper-body control as I get older.

It’s not about showing off or trying to compete with someone half my age.

It’s about staying strong enough to do the things I want to do — now and in the future.

🏋️ Strength
💪 Muscle
🧠 Confidence
🧳 Independence

I’ve been training since I was young, and at 61 I’m still working on getting stronger.

What exercise are you still challenging yourself with? 👇

CHRONIC HIP PAIN: SHOULD YOU STOP STRENGTH TRAINING?

If you’ve been dealing with a chronic hip injury, you might have days when your pain feels a little worse after exercising.

And that can make you think:

“Maybe I shouldn’t be doing these exercises.”

But a temporary increase in symptoms doesn’t automatically mean you’ve caused more damage.

With chronic hip problems, the aim is often to find the right level of exercise and gradually build your strength and capacity over time.

For some people, their pain may be slightly higher the following day but then settle back to their normal level with rest and recovery.

That’s different from pain that continues to build, becomes significantly worse, or doesn’t settle.

The key is learning how your body responds to exercise and adjusting the intensity, volume or exercise selection when needed.

Don’t be afraid of movement.

But don’t ignore your body’s signals either.

Train smart. Progress gradually. Recover properly.

And if you’re unsure about your symptoms or an exercise is causing significant or persistent pain, get advice from an appropriate healthcare professional.

💪 The goal isn’t to do as much as possible. It’s to do what helps you become stronger and more capable.

🪑 3 OF MY FAVOURITE CHAIR-BASED EXERCISES

You don’t need a gym or lots of equipment to work on your strength, coordination and movement.

Here are 3 of my favourite chair-based exercises that you can try at home.

1️⃣ Step & Chest Press
Step forward with one leg while pressing both hands forward at chest level.

2️⃣ Step & Overhead Press
Step forward and press both hands overhead.

3️⃣ Step, Rotate & Reach
Step forward with your right leg, rotate your left arm across your body at stomach level, then reach your left hand overhead.

These movements combine stepping, pressing, rotation and reaching — movements that are useful in everyday life.

And that’s what exercise should be about.

Not just exercising for the sake of exercising.

It’s about helping you stay strong, mobile, coordinated and independent so you can continue doing the things you enjoy.

💡 If you’re new to exercise, use a sturdy chair and keep the movements controlled. Work within a comfortable range and stop if something causes pain or feels unsafe.

At my sessions, we work on practical movements that can help you stay capable as you get older.

Getting older is inevitable. Losing your independence doesn’t have to be. 💪

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOUR HIPS STOPPED HURTING?

Take a moment and really think about that question.

What would you do if you woke up tomorrow and your hips didn’t hurt anymore?

When I was 44, I was living with serious hip pain.

And it wasn’t just the physical pain.

My quality of life started to go downhill.

Pain brought stress.

I couldn’t do the things I wanted to do.

My social life was affected.

My sleep was affected.

I was relying on painkillers just to get through the day.

And even my work was affected.

I’m a Personal Trainer. I’m supposed to demonstrate exercises, move well and help other people become stronger.

But I was limping.

And honestly, it didn’t look good.

When you’re in pain every day, it’s easy to start changing your life around the pain.

You stop doing things.

You avoid activities.

You say no to invitations.

You don’t sleep properly.

You start worrying about what your future is going to look like.

I know because I’ve been there.

Eventually, I had Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, but my journey also taught me that managing your health isn’t just about treating the painful area.

It’s about looking at the bigger picture — strength, movement, recovery, lifestyle and how you want your body to serve you in the future.

Today, I still train, I still run and I still challenge myself.

And that’s something I don’t take for granted.

So I’ll ask you again:

What would you do if your hips stopped hurting?

Would you travel more?

Walk further?

Get back to exercise?

Play with your grandchildren?

Sleep better?

Enjoy going out with friends?

Whatever your answer is, don’t lose sight of it.

That is the life you’re working towards. ❤️

If hip pain is affecting your life, I’ve created a free Hip Confidence Reset to help you take that first step.
