Saturday saw our U14 girls travel to Greenbank Girls looking to bounce back from an opening day defeat last week.
The girls started off brightly and were on the front foot for the opening 10 minutes without creating anything clear cut. Greenbank then had a spell of pressure and pinned us back in our own half with us unable to clear the half way line. The first big chance of the game came for Greenbank as their striker found herself clean through on goal. She made a good connection on the ball from about 10 yards and it looked a certain goal until Isabelle somehow managed to get a hand on the ball and tip it round the post. The rest of the half was even as Louth continued to fight for every ball with Amelia R, Lucia, Mollie and Niamh chasing everything in the middle of the park. The half time whistle came with the score 0-0 with both goalkeepers putting in excellent performances.
The girls were encouraged to keep doing what they were doing in the 2nd half and they delivered with everyone giving it all for the cause.
Shayla, Myriam, Maggie and Maeve were a constant threat going forward and kept the Greenbank defence busy throughout. The breakthrough came about half way into the 2nd half when Myriam was played through on goal. She initially showed great strength to shrug off the defender before hammering the ball into the back of the net.
As the game progressed, Greenbank pushed looking for the equaliser but Emi, Amelia H, Amelia M, Emma and Amelia R were proving difficult to beat as they battled for every ball and not allowing the Greenbank forwards any time on the ball. On the rare occasion that Greenbank managed to get a sight of goal, Isabelle was determined not to be beaten making 2 smart saves before tipping a dipping shot just over the crossbar.
As the game drew to a close, the girls somehow managed to keep their energy levels up desperate to see the game out, clearing everything Greenbank could throw at them. When the final whistle blew, it was met with cheers of delight and relief in equal measure. A fully deserved first 3 points of the season were gained with a battling performance.
Picking player of the match was an extremely difficult task with many of the girls deserving for their performances. Ultimately, having made crucial saves at important times, Isabelle was given this week's award
