Before every class begins, there are a wide range of costs involved in keeping the academy running. Your membership helps cover the rent, business rates, electricity, water, insurance, cleaning products, mat disinfectant, equipment replacement, repairs, accounting, payment processing fees, coaching, belts and grading materials, social media and advertising, security, and many other behind-the-scenes running costs.

It also allows us to continually maintain and improve the academy, ensuring the facilities remain clean, safe, and well looked after for everyone who trains.

When you become a member, you're not simply paying to attend a Jiu-Jitsu class. You're investing in experienced coaching, a professionally run academy, and a training environment that is maintained to a high standard every single day.

People often ask what makes Kyoujin Lurgan different.

The answer isn't the medals, the belts, or the size of the academy. It's the people.

From day one, our goal has been simple: build a welcoming community where everyone feels comfortable, supported, and valued, no matter their age, fitness level, or experience.

Our coaches leave their egos at the door. They're approachable, patient, and passionate about helping others improve. There is no need to prove who's the toughestโ€”only a desire to help each other get better.

At Kyoujin, higher belts help beginners, training partners look after one another, and respect is earned through humility, not intimidation.

We believe people stay because they enjoy the atmosphere. They make friends, gain confidence, improve their fitness, and become part of something bigger than themselves.

That's why Kyoujin Lurgan continues to thriveโ€”not because of flashy marketing, but because of a culture built on humility, respect, and genuine community.... and of course of the standard of our training partners

Leave your ego at the door. Bring your willingness to learn. The rest will take care of itself.

Leadership isn't about standing at the frontโ€”it's about creating an environment where people want to keep showing up.

Over 40 people on our mats today, even during the holiday period. That's not built overnight, and it's not down to one person. It's built through consistency, trust, and a culture where people genuinely want to help each other improve.

When people feel valued, challenged, and part of something bigger than themselves, they keep coming back.

That's the standard we're committed to maintaining. ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿฅ‹

The Gracie family, renowned for pioneering Brazilian jiu-jitsu, traces its origins to Scotland. The story begins with George Gracie, a Scottish immigrant from the Dumfries area in southwest Scotland. In the early 19th century (around 1801โ€“1826), he left his homeland for Brazil, settling in the Parรก region and later connecting with Rio de Janeiro, where he raised a family.

Georgeโ€™s descendants, particularly his grandson Gastรฃo Gracieโ€™s sons โ€” Carlos and Hรฉlio Gracie โ€” adapted Japanese jiu-jitsu into the effective ground-fighting system known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. This martial art emphasized leverage and technique, propelling the family to international fame through vale tudo, MMA, and the UFC.

The surname Gracie is of Scottish Gaelic origin, linked to regions like Argyllshire and traditionally associated with occupational roots. Though the family became thoroughly Brazilian over generations, this Celtic ancestry adds a distinctive layer to their warrior legacy.

Today, the Gracies continue to honor their heritage, with members like Royce Gracie visiting Scotland. It stands as a testament to how migration and cultural blending can forge enduring global impact.

To someone outside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a blue belt may seem like just the second belt. Those who train know it's much more than that.

It's widely estimated that only around 10โ€“20% of people who start BJJ ever earn their blue belt. In other words, roughly 80โ€“90% quit before reaching this milestone.

Why? Because Jiu-Jitsu is hard.

There are no shortcuts. Progress is earned through consistency, perseverance, and the willingness to keep showing up, even when training is tough.

For most people, earning a blue belt takes between 18 months and 3 years of regular training. During that time they'll experience setbacks, frustration, injuries, victories, and countless lessons. They learn to defend themselves, escape difficult positions, apply submissions, and develop confidence under pressure.

A blue belt isn't just a reward for turning upโ€”it's recognition that you've built a solid foundation in one of the world's most demanding martial arts.

If you've earned your blue belt, be proud. You're part of a relatively small percentage of people who started the journey and refused to give up.

And if you're still chasing it, keep going. Every black belt was once a white belt who simply kept coming back.

Our kids' sessions will be taking a well-earned one-month summer break and will recommence in August. Some of the kids aren't too happy about the decision ๐Ÿ˜…, but it's important that our coaches get the chance to catch a bit of sun, relax, and recharge.

This is the first time we've taken any time off since our kids' programme began in February 2022.

At our kids' sessions, our aim is to teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu properly. Like life itself, we challenge them. Nothing is handed out easily, and they have to work hard for every achievement. But do they enjoy it? Absolutely.

We charge a very fair membership fee, and unlike some other martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu doesn't run gradings every few weeks as a money-making scheme. In fact, when we do promote our students, we don't even charge for belts.

We'll also be opening up a limited number of new places in August for children who have been waiting to join our programme. If you've been thinking about getting your child started, keep an eye on the page for more details.

Enjoy the month off, everyone. We'll see you all back on the mats in August! ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿฅ‹
