Caerphilly & Gwent District Youth Rugby Union
To All Youth Teams
We are sure everyone will agree this pandemic has created a major disruption to our game, our clubs, Youth teams, heartache and grief for those loved ones and dear friends we have lost as a result of Covid 19.
Due to the success of the vaccination programme in Wales we can be cautiously optimistic we can avoid any further major disruption in the near future.
We feel now is the appropriate time to resume our duties and uphold our longstanding Youth rugby traditions. Where club representatives of each youth team can meet, openly share their views and concerns in a friendly environment.
Our next Youth meeting will be at 7.30pm at Blackwood RFC on Tuesday 12th October
We will be running the Caerphilly District Youth Cup & Plate, Gwent Youth Cup & Plate in memory of our dear friend and colleague Mr John Boulter, and the Champions & Champions Cup & Plate competitions for the winners of the district cup & plate to play each other.
Entry will be open to all Youth teams in our area, We look forward to seeing you
For any further information please contact John Mullen. email [email protected]
Thanks so much to everyone who supported the 2x2x24 event at Machen Rugby Club last month for their fantastic fundraising challenge for the British Heart Foundation and Velindre Cancer Centre. Including Gift Aid, they've raised a total of Β£12,855.43 for two fantastic causes in memory of Becky Littlewood and Robin Bignell, two much-loved members of the community.

Organiser Sophie Bignell said: β€œWe had roughly 130 people take part in our run, whether that was walking one lap or running the full distance. There was five of us who managed to complete the whole 24 hours, it was tough but so worth it! We had three bands perform over the weekend and raffled over 70 prizes. It’s amazing what a small community can achieve!”

Jayne Lewis, fundraising manager for BHF Cymru said: β€œWe are very grateful to Robin and Becky's family and friends, and the entire community of Machen for organising this inspirational challenge at this very difficult time, supporting two very important causes.
"We always appreciate the efforts of anyone who chooses to fundraise in support of our life saving research, but when an event is in memory of a loved one they have lost, it carries an extra significance to us all.
"We would like to thank everyone who supported or took part in this event. A special mention to the Chairman and officers at Machen Rugby Club who supported the event and made donations on behalf of the club of Β£500 to each of the charities, Β£1000 in total.”

The Chairman Paul Crowley said, β€œWe were all devastated with the loss of Robin Bignell and Becky Littlewood. Both huge characters within our lives and within our club. We think it is only fitting to give something back in memory of them."

The money raised will make a huge difference to our life saving research. Diolch.
Great night Machen Rugby Club. Awesome venue, lovely people for a truly great cause! Thank you so much 2k_every2hrs_for24hrs for asking us to play and for all the hard work you’ve done putting into this event! Thanks for having us! 🀘🏻#britishheartfoundation #velindrefundraising #machenrugbyclub #outshinedwales

This weekend sees a very special fundraising event in aid of the British Heart Foundation and Velindre Cancer Centre taking place at Machen Rugby Club. Thanks to the families and friends of Robin and Becky, and everyone across the community who's supporting their efforts. ❀️
Huge thanks to the whole community of Machen, who are hosting a very special fundraising event in support of the British Heart Foundation and Velindre Cancer Centre Fundraising on 18-19th September at Machen Rugby Club in memory of much loved Robin Bignell and Becky Littlewood.

Robin's daughter, 23-year-old Sophie Bignell says, "2021 has been a difficult year for many, even more so for those who have lost loved ones. This year we were devastated with the loss of Robin Bignell and Becky Littlewood. Both huge characters within our lives and within our community, we think it is only fitting to try and give something back in memory of them.
Our aim, along with a team of friends and family members is to run, walk and scoot around our local playing fields 2k every 2 hours for 24 hours to raise money for two charities very close to our hearts; The British Heart Foundation and Velindre.
We have organised some local bands to play, a bake sale and a raffle, so fingers crossed will be a busy weekend!"

We are very grateful to Robin and Becky's family and friends for their support at this time. You can follow their progress and donate at

Machen U16’s
All Good teams have a blip now and again, and to coin a much used clichΓ©
β€˜It was a bad day at the office’
Defeat is not something that this team is used to, but today, in the crisp sunshine and within the shadows of the nearby Roman fortress, our brave warriors succumbed to the Caerleon onslaught.
Whilst being on a par for the first quarter, a culmination of sloppy handling and lack of organisation, allowed the home team to take the lead, and from thereinafter it was quite evident that it would be an uphill struggle to gain any parity.
This coupled with the loss to injury to key players Iwan, Archie and Sam at different periods during the game, further added to our woes.
But not all was negative, and a few good performances were on display, most notably Marcus, who was always to the fore in attack, and also Corey, who having started as a replacement ended up playing in 3 different positions during the game.
But perhaps the most outstanding performance of the day belongs to Elliott, who showed that he could pull off a convincing performance in the face of adversity, which would be worthy of an Oscar in anyone’s book! πŸ˜œπŸ˜‚πŸ‘πŸ»
A big welcome to Zac, who made his first appearance for us, and as Al said after the game, sometimes a defeat can make us stronger, so onward and upward for next week.

Happy hour today 5 - 7 πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€—
Β£2.50 on all draft for Members.
Β£3 for non members

U16’s first game of the New year, resulted in an emphatic 48-12 win v Croesyceiliog.
Some great running and link play between forwards and backs, resulted in a superb all round performance, which yielded 8 tries.
Ben Owen, Sam Bryan and Elliott Goode stood firm in the front row to give our loose forwards, George Vaughan, James Perry and Harvey Picton the space and time to showpiece their skills.
This in turn gave the backs, superbly marshalled at half back by Morgan Wright and Ben Williams, the chance to unleash our superb runners in Fred Roach, Iwan James and Jamie Ryzy, who were clinical in their finishing.
However this wouldn’t have worked without the strong performances of Tyler Rees and Oshan Crook, both possibly playing their best games for us so far.
But these performances are only possible if the β€˜boiler house’ performs, and a big shout goes to Ioan Williams and Reiley Smith who both put in a massive shift today, and after Reiley had to depart with an injury, Marcus Prosser entered the fray
and was absolutely impeccable in both attack and defence, and has been a huge addition to our squad.
Obviously a very difficult choice for β€˜Man of the Match’ when so many of the team stepped up, but that accolade today goes to the β€˜scruffiest’ conversion taker, Mr George Vaughan! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»

Tries:- Ben Williams 2, Iwan James 2, Jamie Ryzy 2, George Vaughan, Harvey Picton.
Cons:- Ben Williams, Fred Roach, George Vaughan 2

Well done tonight boys, our Machen contingent representing Rhymney Valley! Fantastic experience playing in a famous ground against Pontypool.
After leading for most of the game, a narrow 12-7 defeat was the final outcome, but considering Pontypool haven’t lost at home since 2016, and after beating them 40-10 in the last game, then this wasn’t a bad performance.
Well done lads!!

Congratulations to Gethyn Cannon and Josh Hart on being called up to the Wales U18s squad.
