On Saturday 19th March some of our SUP Club regulars took part in the Hurley Classic Event. Part of the event is an obstacle SUP race with the added challenge of paddling in the white water near Hurley weir. For Rachel this was her first experience of this type of water.
“A year after completing the beginners SUP course at Bray Lake, I joined my first away day for the Hurley Classic, an international paddle sport festival. 7 of us went and competed in the Enduro Rough Waters race. It was all going swimmingly until the first pontoon where most of us fell in and got pinned by the rapid water. After being pulled out and sent on our way we had a 2-lap route around the islands of Hurley weir ahead of us.
We had lots of obstacles to contend with: we had to surrender our paddles and pull ourselves along using ropes above our head, followed by running under nets whilst carrying our boards, then battle up stream to brave the slaloms and finally dare to attempt a turn in white water in front of the weir. I think my biggest achievement was managing to stay on my board while putting my paddle through a hoop above my head at the same time as waving to the team.
It was so much fun, definitely a challenge, and a reminder of the power of flowing waters. A great day out and thank you to Candice and Bray Lake Watersports for organising the trip.”
Well done to all the Bray Lake paddlers who took part.
