Not long ago, say in the 2000s (this was 24 years ago!), Bon Jovi released 'It's My Life', Guy Ritchie released 'Sn**ch', and women were still stuck on X-Trainers. There was a perception that exercise was unladylike and unfeminine; the most significant growing fitness trend was Zumba, and the weight section of the gym was still an intimidating place for females to venture into. โ›”

Fast forward to now, thanks to celebrity endorsements, women want to lift weights and get stronger, and talking about menopause isn't confined to pre-class whispers. ICON Gym is mostly made up of women, and we mostly lift weights. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Is this good? YES! Strength training is the single most significant factor that will determine the quality of your life; you can enjoy your life more, sleep better, spend time with your friends and travel to remote places, all because you lift some weights 2-4 times per week.

How do you approach training in the gym? Ask the coaches, and they will help you; if they are not helping you, reach out, and we will help you. ๐Ÿ’ฌ

Ensure you train each muscle group at least twice per week, at least 10 sets per week, and around 90 repetitions per muscle group.

Consider fatigue; always test new programmes to see if they zap your energy in the afternoon.

When you train, make it hard, especially the final few repetitions, take days off, and jump from one programme to another sparingly.

๐ŸŒŸ Personalised nutrition for busy professionals ๐ŸŒŸ

At ICON, we approach nutrition in a way that's similar to our workout structure. We lay out basic principles and then provide individual guidelines. You can personalise your nutrition plan by following our three rules, calculating your intake, and tracking your progress for at least a week. ๐Ÿ“Š๐Ÿ

The three rules are as follows:
1๏ธโƒฃ Eat 80-90% of your calories from whole food sources such as vegetables, fruits, meat, poultry, dairy, nuts, fish, and eggs. Stuff you know as a grown-up, is good for you ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿฅฆ๐Ÿ—

2๏ธโƒฃ Allocate 10-20% of your calories for more processed items such as sweets, takeaways, and alcohol. Stuff you like, but that in larger amounts takes you away from the goals. ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿท

3๏ธโƒฃ Track your calories using our app or other apps like MyfitnessPal. Tracking your calories can be tedious, but it helps you identify your current habits so you can adjust accordingly. ๐Ÿ“ฑ

Once you know the rules, it's time to calculate your intake. To do so, visit https://tdeecalculator.net/ or any TDEE calculator and complete the details. When calculating your activity level, remember that your daily activity matters as much, if not more, than your time at the gym. You are considered sedentary if you do less than 5,000 steps a day. You set light exercise if you do 5,000-7,500 steps a day. If you do 7,500-10,000 steps daily, you exercise moderately, etc. ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Once you have your maintenance intake, which is the number of calories you need to maintain your current weight, you can subtract 300 calories to lose fat. For example, a 42-year-old female weighing 65kg and doing 6,000 steps daily has a maintenance intake of 1,800 calories. To lose fat, she would need to consume 1,500 calories. ๐Ÿ”ข

To set up your nutrition plan, use your TDEE score minus 300, set fats at 30%, protein at 1.5-2g per 1kg of body weight, and the rest for carbs. For the example above, the plan would be:
- 1,500 calories
- 30% of calories for fat, which equates to 450 calories or 55g daily
- Protein at 1.5g per 1kg of body weight, which would be 97.5g or 390 calories (25%)
- The remaining 45% of carbs calories is 675 calories or 170g.

Don't worry if this seems like a lot to take in. Read it over a few times, apply it while rereading it, and it will become easy. Remember, you can constantly adjust your plan as you go. If you need help, send us a direct message. ๐Ÿ“ฉ๐Ÿ’ช

We understand that going to the gym can be uncomfortable and intimidating, but don't worry, we are here to help! ๐Ÿ‘

At our gym, we don't believe in overcrowded spaces, misplaced equipment, or intimidating people. We always make sure to speak with you before you start and have a friendly chat with you to understand your needs and expectations. We want to make sure you are comfortable and ready to start your fitness journey with us. ๐ŸŒŸ

During your first consultation with our team, we will assess your movements and establish the best starting level for you. We will also take notes, so that the whole team is on board and can help you achieve your goals safely. ๐Ÿ“‹

When you attend your first session, every member of our team will know your name and any modifications that may be needed for your workout to ensure your safety and success. ๐Ÿค—

If you are feeling intimidated about going to the gym, there are a few things that can help. Firstly, you can check out the gym's location, parking, and facilities. You can also speak to a member of staff at the gym and ask them any questions that you may have. It may also help to plan out your workout ahead of time, so that you know what to expect and can feel more comfortable. ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

It's important to remember that feeling anxious in a new environment is normal, but you are not alone. Most people in the gym are there to better themselves and are supportive of others. The more you attend, the more comfortable you will feel. And always remember why you are there - to improve your health and fitness! ๐Ÿ’ช

'Over the few decades, we have invented countless time saving machines that are supposed to make life more relaxed - washing machines, vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, telephones, mobile phones, computers, email. We thought we were saving time; instead, we revved up the treadmill of life to ten times its former speed and made our days more anxious and agitated.'

This quote from Sapiens perfectly describes modern times; we're always on our phones, guilty that we could be doing more, and always confused about what to do.

I get it because I'm guilty of it, too.

However, health will save us time because we will live longer and better, so how can we become healthier versions of ourselves without sacrificing other tasks in our day?

Here is our bullet point list to make it easier to remember
โœ… Try working out twice per week, more if you can, but don't stress if you can't
โœ… Try incorporating more steps into your day, something as simple as filling your water glass more often, standing up for the call, park further.
โœ… Prepare meals ahead, or stock buy foods you know you like and can reach for quickly; when buying pre-made meals, look for protein content to be at least 20g per serving. Eat 4-7 portions of any fruit or veg a day.
โœ… When you work out, go hard at it.
โœ… Pick three to six exercises; it doesn't need to be complicated; at ICON, we always work with around 5 - 7 movements per session.
โœ… When you're busy, everything becomes more manageable with planning, so plan when you will work out if you can.
โœ… Remember your water; carrying a water bottle helps to remember to stay hydrated.
โœ… If you think you need to sleep, you should head to bed. Leave the phone behind.
โœ… If your week doesn't work out perfectly, DON'T WORRY about it. If you missed brushing your teeth this morning, you're just less pleasant to listen to, but your teeth will stay intact. All you need to do is brush them on the next occasion. This goes for fitness and food; you can always pick up where you left off.

Appreciation post!

Teamwork is crucial in achieving our goals!

We recently sent over 200 hand-signed postcards, which would not have been possible without the help of different individuals and organizations.
We collaborated with the local printing company, Print'n'Projects from Cookham, to design the postcards. Kate from Affinity Merchandise provided us with amazing gift designs. To sign all three full bags worth of cards, we had a fantastic team of coaches so our lovely Alicja could get on with the task.

And finally, we would not have anyone to send our cards to or enjoy a tipple if not for our amazing members! We appreciate everyone's contribution and effort in making this project a success!


Today, we've been open for five years.
In the last five years, 1400 people trained over 100,000 times.

People worked out with us a hundred thousand times, which is mindboggling for us.

Our Members lost weight equivalent to 6 African Elephants and lifted over 100 times that.

Our Members reversed their diabetes and improved their sleep and lifestyle, climbed the mountain for the first time, played with their grandchildren, and went on holiday without being anxious about the activities.

They all say that their quality of everyday life has improved.

In this picture, I picked up the keys to an empty tyre centre five years ago today.

I had a vision of transforming it into a small group training facility. At the time, small group training was not as popular as today. I had my own concept of achieving health and enjoyment for my clients.

It's hard to believe that five years have already passed. I have aged about ten years and learned a lot during this time. However, I'm thankful for the progress and success that myself and the team have achieved.

I look forward to at least another five years of learning and improving myself, my team, and our members.
