Yoga for Cancer Recovery: New Research Highlights Powerful Benefits

An article in the shows a new clinical trial involving 410 cancer survivors found that a structured yoga programme significantly reduced anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, and overall mood disturbance.

The IY(UK) therapy committee recently did a workshop which was based on therapy book. These workshops are available for IY(UK) teachers in the UK.

For many people living with or recovering from cancer, yoga offers more than movement - it can provide a supportive, non-pharmaceutical way to improve sleep, reduce stress and enhance quality of life.

At its heart, yoga helps us reconnect with our breath, our bodies, and our resilience.

The new term of our six week foundation course starts on Tuesday 2nd June – 7th July 2026, 18:30-19:30 with Peter. Introducing new and returning students to the principles and techniques of Iyengar Yoga.

No matter your age, experience, or ability, Iyengar yoga meets you where you are, and Peter will guide you forward. With precise alignment, supportive props, and mindful instruction, every body can move safely, build strength, and find calm.

Yesterday our group climbed the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya, ascending step by step through winding stairways, carved stone pathways, and breathtaking views stretching across the lush landscape below. Such an achievement… effort, silence, awe, and space.
From there we journeyed on to the sacred caves of Dambulla, entering cool, quiet spaces filled with centuries of devotion, Buddha statues, painted ceilings, and a deep sense of stillness.
These days seem to echo so much of the retreat itself… practice not only on the mat, but through experience, presence, wonder, and shared moments together.

We arrived back in time for our evening practice at 5:15pm, softer now, quieter perhaps. Restorative practice, breath, and chanting allowing the day to settle gently inwards.

More to come as we enter the last week of our journey.

Today our retreat group journeyed from the lush heart of Sri Lanka’s Central Province up into the misty mountain landscapes, surrounded by winding roads, tea plantations, and beautiful wildlife. Along the way we stopped at Sabaragamuwa elephant sanctuary, spending time with these gentle beings in their natural rhythm.

The beauty here feels both grounding and expansive. Cooler mountain air, rolling plantations. Each experience feels like an extension of the yoga practice itself—an invitation to observe, quiet moments of connection, to be present are all becoming part of the retreat experience.

Tomorrow we return to our yoga programme, asana, restorative practice, breath, chanting, stillness, and reflection, allowing the experiences of the island to settle inwardly.

Yesterday students from Maidstone Yoga Centre and beyond arrived in the lush, soulful landscape of Sri Lanka, welcomed by warm air, ocean rhythms, and a sense of quiet anticipation. We are here at Jim's Farm Villas, under the guidance of our senior teacher Lin Craddock.

This retreat is unfolding as a deep dive into the wisdom of the Yoga Sutras–threading philosophy into practice, breath and awareness. Our days begin with grounding morning asana, awakening the body as the island stirs to life. Evenings invites us to soften–restorative postures, and the soothing resonance of chanting carrying us inwards.

Stillness here isn’t the absence of movement, but the quiet clarity that arises within it.

Between practice, the magic of this place holds us, today time with sea turtles. More to come as the journey unfolds.✨

This beginner-friendly class is centred on standing poses designed to gently build strength, improve balance, and bring greater awareness to the legs and feet. With clear guidance and steady pacing, you’ll explore simple grounding actions—like pressing evenly through the feet and aligning the knees—that create a strong, supportive foundation. The focus is on developing stability and confidence without strain, helping you feel more secure and steady in each pose. By learning how to root down through the feet, you’ll experience a sense of ease and clarity throughout the whole body, making this an accessible and empowering place to begin your practice.
