Arthritis Care: Keeping Horses Comfortable

As the weather cools, some horses, especially older ones, may start to show signs of stiffness or discomfort. Colder temperatures, reduced turnout and changes in routine can all affect horses living with arthritis.

Every horse is different and early intervention can make a real difference to maintaining mobility and quality of life.

Could your horse be showing signs of Cushing's Disease (PPID)?

PPID is a common condition in older horses and early testing can help identify the condition and support long term health and wellbeing.

The ACTH blood test is the main way to diagnose PPID. A blood sample is analysed for ACTH levels, with raised levels indicating the possibility of the condition.

When should you test?
ACTH levels naturally fluctuate throughout the year, especially in summer and autumn. While autumn is often the recommended time for testing, horses showing signs of PPID or health changes can be tested year round.

Meet, Dibley. This cheeky little chap has been a visiting the Hospital over the years for dental treatment by Moses Brennan.
Dibley had fillings replaced last month to prevent sinusitis, which was originally treated back in 2017. He occasionally requires the bridges to be replaced as his teeth constantly grow, the last time was 2 years ago, however regular checks have prevented recurrence of his sinusitis and meant he has not had to have any teeth extracted and remains in good health.

Arthritis: Cold weather can increase stiffness, so gentle exercise and regular turnout can help.
PPID (Cushing's disease): If your horse has PPID, monitor their weight, coat changes and overall health closely.
Weight loss: Reduced grazing and higher energy demands may require extra nutrition.
Dental health: Regular dental checks help ensure older horses can eat comfortably.
Shelter & feeding: Provide shelter, good quality forage, and suitable feeds to keep
them warm and maintain condition.

Today, during World Animal Remembrance Month, we pause to honour the horses and cherished companions who are no longer with us.
As equine vets, we know the bond between a horse and their owner is unlike any other. Every horse leaves a lasting mark and saying goodbye is never easy.
We feel privileged to have been part of so many horses' lives, supporting them through every stage, from their first steps to their final moments. To everyone remembering a much loved horse today, please know you're not alone. Their memories, their personalities and the joy they brought will never be forgotten.

🍂Did you know Atypical Myopathy is a risk in autumn?🍂

As the leaves fall, cases of Atypical Myopathy can increase in horses and ponies grazing pastures with sycamore trees. This serious and often life threatening muscle disease is linked to the ingestion of sycamore seeds, seedlings, or leaves, particularly during damp, windy autumn weather.
If you’re unsure about your pasture risk this autumn, speak to your vet team for advice.
