Lancashire Lions Move to the Top of the Table

Lancashire Lions climbed to the top of the National League table with an impressive all-round performance, combining disciplined bowling with a well-managed run chase.

The Lions made the perfect start with the ball as Shah and Tahseen removed both opposition openers early, immediately putting Lancashire in control. Shah was outstanding throughout his spell, bowling with pace, accuracy and intelligence, constantly asking questions of the batters and never allowing them to settle. The pressure continued to build, and Tahseen then produced a match-changing over by claiming two wickets, preventing the batting side from building any momentum.

Despite the setbacks, captain Asif looked ready to launch a counter-attack. After striking boundaries, he began to grow in confidence and looked capable of changing the course of the game. Sheraz responded brilliantly, bowling a couple of testing deliveries that forced Asif onto the back foot before eventually bringing an end to the captain’s innings. The breakthrough came when Amjad produced a spectacular catch off Sheraz’s bowling to dismiss the dangerous Asif, another key turning point in the match.

Lancashire continued to tighten their grip on the game when Sheraz struck again, helping break the backbone of the batting line-up and leaving the opposition struggling to recover. Shah capped off a fantastic spell with three deserved wickets, combining relentless accuracy with excellent control to produce one of the standout bowling performances of the day. Sheraz also claimed three crucial wickets, while Tahseen’s two wickets were equally important in keeping Lancashire firmly on top throughout the innings. Liakat and Shoaib also contributed with a wicket apiece in a strong team bowling performance.

Chasing the target, Lancashire suffered an early setback when both Shahzeb and Will were dismissed without scoring. Zahid, the wicketkeeper-batsman, then laid the foundations for the chase with a calm and composed innings of 35 runs, while Shah played a fiery knock at the other end, keeping the scoreboard moving. After Shoaib was dismissed, the experienced pair of Sheraz and Amjad took control of the innings.

Showing their class, composure and experience, Sheraz and Amjad guided Lancashire closer to the target with sensible batting and excellent game awareness. Leading from the front, captain Sheraz produced a composed and assured captain’s innings, expertly managing the chase under pressure and ensuring there were no further alarms. Once the hard work had been done, Sheraz and Tahseen finished the job in style, knocking off the remaining runs and securing victory with 14 overs to spare.

The standout bowling performances came from Shah and Sheraz with three wickets each, supported by Tahseen with two wickets, while Liakat and Shoaib added a wicket apiece.

This latest victory sees Lancashire Lions move to the top of the National League table, where they now sit proudly as the team to catch.

Lancashire Lions produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat Bradford & District after winning the toss and electing to bowl first. Lancashire’s bowlers kept regular pressure on the Bradford batting line-up, restricting them to 140 all out in 23.1 overs despite several useful middle-order contributions.

Bradford & District struggled early, slipping to 5-1 and then 7-2 as Lancashire struck with the new ball. Haroon Mahmood and Arif Malik attempted to rebuild the innings, with Malik playing a steady knock before Usman Zahid added valuable late runs. However, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, preventing Bradford from building major partnerships. The innings eventually closed on 140-8, with a huge number of extras contributing significantly to the total.

Lancashire’s bowling attack shared the wickets effectively. Salman Sheikh was the standout performer with three wickets, while Lewis Kurucz, Nathan Jacques, Arslan Sabir and Nadeem Rana all chipped in with important breakthroughs. Tight spells from Zahid Mahmood and Mohammed Eesa also helped slow the scoring rate.

After choosing to field first, Lancashire justified the decision with disciplined bowling and sharp fielding. Their control throughout the innings ensured Bradford & District never gained momentum, leaving Lancashire well placed to chase the target and secure victory
Lancashire Lions North made light work of the chase with an aggressive batting display, comfortably reaching the target after Bradford & District posted 140-8.

Openers Nathan Jacques and Nadeem Rana started steadily before Rana was dismissed for 10, stumped by Arif Malik off the bowling of Usman Zahid. Shoaib Nazir struggled to get going and fell for 2, leaving Lancashire needing a partnership to regain momentum.

Arslan Sabir then produced the innings of the match, smashing a brilliant 51 from just 34 balls, including eight boundaries at a strike rate of 150.00. His attacking stroke play shifted the game firmly in Lancashire’s favour and broke the back of the chase. Nathan Jacques anchored the innings superbly from the other end, remaining unbeaten on 47 from 33 deliveries with six fours.

After Sabir retired not out, Kashif Mahmood added the finishing touches with an unbeaten 4 as Lancashire completed the chase comfortably with wickets in hand.

Bradford & District’s bowlers found it difficult to contain Lancashire’s aggressive batting. Liaqat Hussain and Usman Zahid claimed a wicket each, but the Lions’ strong partnerships and positive intent ensured the target was reached without major trouble.

💙 Meet Shane 💙

Shane joined the club on his 13th birthday through our partnership work with Victa this year, and what a journey it has already been!

Shane has LCA (Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis), and for a long time he wanted to find a sport where he truly felt included. He had previously tried various sports and activities, but nothing ever really felt right as many groups weren’t designed for visually impaired young people.

One sport, however, always stood out to him — Goalball. 🥅

It was something Shane had always wanted to get involved in, and since joining the club he has absolutely embraced it with passion and determination. He now really looks forward to every session and has found a genuine sense of belonging within the club environment.

Not only has Shane developed confidence through Goalball, but he’s also been encouraged to try other sports and activities alongside it. Being surrounded by people who understand, support and inspire him has made a huge difference.

His mum said:
“This is something we’ve always been looking for and it’s been a perfect fit. Having role models Shane can look up to has really helped and his confidence is growing all the time.”

We’re incredibly proud to have Shane as part of the club and are excited to continue supporting him on his journey. Partnerships like this with organisations like Victor show just how important inclusive sport and community opportunities can be for young people living with visual impairments.

We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Shane 💙

🏆 Lancashire Lions Weekend Roundup 🏆

It was a fantastic weekend for Lancashire Lions as we took part in three different sports across Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

🎳 We started the weekend with our tenpin bowling team, who reached the trios finals. This was a brilliant achievement and a great experience for the players, as it was the first time they had reached a final. The team thoroughly enjoyed the occasion and represented the Lions brilliantly.

🎮 Across Saturday and Sunday, four of our players competed in the BBS Spring Showdown competition. The players really enjoyed the event and learned a great deal throughout the tournament. As this was a new sport for the Lions, the experience provided valuable tips and lessons to take forward into future competitions.

👏 A special mention goes to Sohail, who finished in 10th place out of 44 participants — an excellent achievement for the Lions.

⚾ To round off the weekend, our baseball team competed in the UKBBA League and secured a 4-0 victory against East Lancs Legends. It was a tough match, with the opposition showing clear improvement since last season, and the rain unfortunately preventing the full game from being completed. However, enough of the fixture was played for an official result to be awarded, and the Lions were delighted to come away with the win.

💛 Overall, it was a fantastic weekend for Lancashire Lions, filled with success, learning, development and plenty of enjoyment across all three sports.
