🟢 Match report - Saturday 24th October⚫️
North Manchester RUFC vs Bury RUFC (Away)
Everyone has one of those stories where they played in sideways rain, hands numb, the backs are freezing, every 30 seconds there’s a scrum - this game was an addition to those stories.
The weather was always going to dictate the type of game but the lads from North headed to Bury to right two wrongs from last season and short of the ref calling it off, nothing was going to slow them down.
North scored in the first 10 minutes when a lost ball was collected by Matt Wilson who took his time, saw his gap and powered through to put the ball down under the sticks to make Scott’s conversion simple.
For the next 10 minutes, Bury found their foothold in the game and camped out in the North half utilising their strong runners and drilled maul’s to put pressure on us. In days gone by, this might have phased the lads but they dug in and held the onslaught off.
Around half way through the first half North got a bit of movement going and Pete cleverly drilled a ball through for Keifer to chase down. He managed to get his toe on the ball to take it away from the hands if the defender and touch the ball down.
Bury’s relentlessness though did pay off just before the half where they tapped from a penalty from the 5 and drove over for an unconverted try.
First half 12 - 5
Once again in the second half North brought on Reece and Mike (who remembered he needed both right and left boots this week) who brought the sort of physicality that would continue to hold Bury off. It had an immediate impact when Reece chased a Bramwell kick to force a turnover where Big Lew picked and drove over for an early second half try.
Bury then made a good job of making the lads rush through their game management and the conditions led to a return try 10 minutes later.
With 20 minutes to go, North’s 13, Pinky, decided he was going to put pressure on the Bury back line with a few kick throughs that forced turnovers, scrums and scrambles one of which saw Matt carry through for his second of the day. Bury were not going to let this go easily and after some ill-disciplined defence managed to claw another try back to make it 26-17 with 10 to go. Andy walked behind the sticks as the lads caught their breath and said simply “26-17, no more mistakes, look after the ball.” The lads managed this capping off another victory with a second pick and drive try from Big Lew on the 80th minute mark to take North to 4/4, 3 of them on the road and another well earned wrong righted. Full time 31 - 15 to the green and black!
The next few weeks have consecutive home games plus bonfire night on the 7th so get down and support the lads.
