5 STRETCHES TO HELP YOU SQUAT DEEP | EP 03 08/08/2019

Deep squat - the lost primal art.

Have you ever wondered why free squatting has become a difficult task for us? Especially considering that 2/3 of the world's population can do it with ease, and some how remain in that position for more than thirty minutes. Well there is a simple answer to that - the chair. Who would have thought that the modern invention of the common seat/chair could affect us so profoundly in a deep physiological, psychological and biological level. Why do we suffer from digestion problems, cannot defecate properly, and go through agonising hip, knee and ankle joint issues? Well the root symptoms start from when we first adopt the chair, at the ages of 4-5.

In this video I'm going to be going over five stretches that you can use to help you open up certain areas of the lower body, to help you squat deeper. I've been using some of these stretches for over five years, and I've massively seen the benefits.

Try them out and let me know how they go!

Over the last three year of my handstand journey, one of the most common questions I get asked is why I got into handstands. So in this video, I'm going to be giving you my top five reasons why you should embark on your own handstand journey (if you haven't done so already). Plus an update as to where I am with my current flexibility/mobility.

So here's five reasons to train handstands. Enjoy!

When it comes to the topic of stretching, most of us only spare a few minutes before or after our training session to dedicate to the process. Glossing over the importantace of listening to the signs that our body is telling us.

Stretching is the process of softening the body through breathing and contracting the parts of our body we want to focus our attention on. However, what most of us don't know about stretching is that a large number of muscular restrictions are in the mind, not the body.

In fact studies have shown that a person lost of consciousness (e.g. under a coma) has the ability to bend their body in almost any way fit. But as soon as consciousness is restored, the restrictions in the body return. This is because our mind has a map of all of the processes/experiences that happen in the body.

In these Stretch Therapy classes, we will learn to make stretching a more therapeutic experience by contracting and then softening to go deeper into a stretch. This way we can remap our mind to release the restrictions imposed on the body.

If you have any questions about the class, then send us a direct message or leave us a comment 🙏🏽

We've teamed up with Space At The Mill on Deansgate to bring you late handstand classes every Tuesday at 7.45-8.45pm. The late start is perfect for those looking to avoid the current Manchester traffic.
These classes are open to all levels of handstand competence. So if you're a complete beginner and have no idea where to start, or if you're someone just looking to improve their current skill level, these classes will cater for YOU!

Thank you to everyone that attended the handstand workshop on Saturday!

With a lot of the individuals that attended, we successfully managed to go from being a little fearful of going upside down, to being able to kick up into a freestanding handstand and spending a couple of seconds balancing in the sweet spot. That was a huge achievement on it's own!

With some of the more experienced individuals, we managed to try out new variations/entries, and focusing on extending the time in our handstands.

And finally, for the three that were quite fearful of going upside down at the start of the workshop, we managed to walk backwards onto the wall whilst maintaining solid form. And we learnt how to perform a cartwheel onto the wall, which hopefully in the future will translate into becoming the exit of our freestanding handstand.

All in all, it was a successful workshop, and I hope to see you again soon!

One of the reasons why we struggle to sit comfortably in a free squat position is the tightness in our hips. Having tight hips not only causes us restriction in the hip region, but also it causes a multitude of problems in different areas of our bodies.

Here's a great routine that can be either slotted in before a lower body session or just after that will help alleviate the restriction, and helps towards gaining back more mobility in the hip region.

If you're struggling to squat deeper than 90 degrees, these stretches will make a great addition as a warm up.

Repost from Training for flexibility should never be unbearably painful. We should feel a slight amount of discomfort at the most. Here's a great pike stretch suggested by using the friction element of a yoga ball to allow us to get a straighter back. Best part is that it can be performed solo!
