NORTHERN FOURS & JUNIOR LEAGUE

A&T contested Round 5 of the Northern Fours League series at Bury on Sunday. There were excellent performances by Frank White, Oscar Belt and Riley Candy, who all won races. However, the absence of a fourth rider once again proved costly in this competition, as A&T finished in 5th place on the day and remain in 5th place in the table. Bury won the match on the day, to close the gap on leaders Sheffield. The final round takes place at Cookson Park, Sheffield on 18 October.

Categories were combined and scores subsequently adjusted in all the Round 5 Northern Junior League matches. Hull narrowly beat Sheffield, with A&T pipping Heckmondwike for third place.

SUCCESSFUL BJL FINALE AT GIN PIT

Astley & Tyldesley hosted the 4th and final National round of the British Junior League series at Gin Pit on Saturday. Racing took place on a warm, sunny day, with the track in excellent condition, following plenty of rain during the week. The usual slick promotion by the host club saw six matches and presentations completed in five hours. There was an impressive array of awards provided by the BJL funds and fund raising set up by Leon Mower, along with goodies from the host A&T club.

13 riders contested the u-8 Little League match. Kesgrave's Oscar Avram raced unbeaten throughout the match and sealed the overall series with a maximum 80 GP points. Team mate Sienna Hammond was runner-up, Sheffield's Zach Athersych third and Kesgrave's Ruby Rawlings fourth. The GP A Final order on the day and the final series standings were the same.

U-8 GP FInals:

6 riders made up the u-10 Little League match. Poole's Isaac Laing raced unbeaten and clinched the overall series win, scoring the maximum 80 GP points. Wednesfield's Jenson Corbett was 2nd on the day, ahead of Reggie Edge-Fay of Horspath and Gt. Blakenham's Charlie Williams. In the overall standings, Williams retained his 2nd place, whilst Corbett moved up to take 3rd place.

U-10 GP FInals:

11 riders participated in the u-12 match. Four riders tied for 1st place in the qualifying heats, all on 15 points, so an open draw for grid positions was made for the Grand Prix A Final. Kesgrave's Freddie Mower took the race win from grid 2, completing the series win with a maximum score of 80 GP points. Team mate Archie Rawlings was runner-up, with Southampton's Thomas Comben third and Sheffield's Lincoln Ackroyd fourth. This result ensured that Comben finished 2nd in the overall series on 68 points, one ahead of Rawlings in third place.

U-12 GP FInals:
A Final: Freddie Mower (Kesgrave), Archie Rawlings (Kesgrave), Thomas Comben (Southampton), Lincoln Ackroyd (Sheffield).
B Final: Toby Lammin (Horspath), Jackson Chapman (Poole), Isaac Emms (Hethersett), Elijah Rechembei (A&T).
C Final: Lincoln Powling (Kesgrave), Nyla El-Labany (Hethersett), Caiden Spencer (Coventry).

The u-14 match comprised 7 riders. Hull's Harry Gibson and Newport's Kalem Martin joint top scored in the qualifiers, dropping a point to each other. Gibson won the toss for grid positions in the A Final and took the lead from grid 1. Martin attempted a pass on the pits bend and took a heavy fall after clipping Gibson's back wheel. There was a lengthy delay, with Kalem suffering a shoulder injury and excluded from the re-run as the cause of the stoppage. Gibson made no mistakes to win the re-run and take the overall series win, on 76 GP points. Southampton's Sam Comben was 2nd in the A Final, with Hethersett's Luca El-Labany 3rd. In the overall series standings, El-Labany finished 2nd on 71 points and Martin 3rd on 66. We wish Kalem Martin a full and speedy recovery from his injuries.

Just 4 riders lined up for the u-16 match. Series leader, Sheffield's Oliver Banyard, and A&T's Frank White, making his first appearance of the season in this event, tied on 14 points in the qualifiers. In the GP Final, Oliver won the toss for grid positions and took the lead from grid 1. Frank came through to execute a fine pass on the third lap and take the race win. Kesgrave's Isaac Powling finished 3rd and A&T's Oscar Belt 4th. In the overall series placings, Banyard took the win with 78 GP points, ahead of Powling on 70 points and Belt third on 65.

U-16 GP FInal:
A Final: Frank White (A&T), Oliver Banyard (Sheffield), Isaac Powling (Kesgrave), Oscar Belt (A&T).

Again, 4 riders lined up for the Girls match. Sheffield's Lacey Ackroyd raced unbeaten to win on the day and clinch the overall series win, with a maximum score of 80 GP points. Hethersett's Lola Martin was 2nd in the GP Final, ahead of Poole's Ava Chapman and A&T's Charlotte Brighouse. This ensured that Martin finished runner-up in the overall series, on 72 points, with Chapman third on 68.

Girls GP FInal:
A Final: Lacey Ackroyd (Sheffield), Lola Martin (Hethersett), Ava Chapman (Poole), Charlotte Brighouse (A&T).
Referee - Leon Mower.

Kesgrave took the team win on the day, to clinch the overall team trophy for winning the series.

WEEKEND PREVIEW

Astley & Tyldesley hosts the 4th and final national round of the 2026 British Junior League series, at Gin Pit, this Saturday. First race is at 11.00 am, with six individual grand prix series titles and one team title up for grabs. Come and see Britain's best young cycle speedway riders in action.

On Sunday, A&T will be one of six clubs contesting the 5th round of the Northern Fours & Junior League series at Bury, 12 noon start.

As the season draws to a close, make the most of this double header weekend of cycle speedway racing in Greater Manchester.

The final Northern League match of the season and title decider lived up to expectations - it was close…so close.

The opening races with Bury were tied 5-5 despite the return of one of their “old boys” Ben. This set the scene for the day … there was going to be no easy races. An unfortunate exclusion and a first corner incident not called back added to the excitement (tension) and at the half way point there was nothing in it with Sheffield on 33, Astley 31 and Bury 27. We needed to beat Sheffield and them beat Bury to take the title but by the penultimate race we were still 2 points down on Sheffield. Sadly they took the win 6-4 extending their lead.
Final scores Sheffield 66, Astley 62, Bury 58 and Fife 47. Bury won the title by 0.5 points from Astley, with Fife in third.

Consolation prize was Frank taking the final Match A Individual Cup, beating Sheffield’s Oliver Banyard from the inside gate.

The five riders racing today should be very proud - they battled and supported each other. It has been a tough season where we have managed (sometimes only just) to field a team at every round. We started in the B division and managed to move and stay in Division A. We have two 15yr olds as the core of the team and a loan rider from a Sheffield (thanks so much Ed) to be our Team Manager following the passing of Steve Harris at Easter. There was solid support from John and Emily too, and we cannot forget the contributions from Mike, Frank N, Riley, Ashley, and Amy to keep us in contention. We BELIEVED and have shown great resilience this year to keep pedalling. Steve would not have expected anything less.

WELL DONE OSCAR!

Congratulations to A&T's Oscar Belt on taking 2nd place in the u-16 Final of the British Junior League Round 3 match at Horspath yesterday. This keeps Oscar very much in contention for an overall rostrum place. The final Round is at Gin Pit on Saturday 3rd October.

NORTH & SCOTLAND LEAGUE TITLE DECIDER TOMORROW

Cookson Park, Sheffield will be the venue for the 8th and final round of the North & Scotland League series. Astley & Tyldesley are currently in 2nd place, just 1.5 points behind the leaders Bury. Although the league comprises nine teams, it's a straight shoot out between Bury and A&T for the title. A&T need to finish two or three places ahead of Bury to take the title, otherwise Bury will be the champions.

It all hinges on the Group A match, between A&T, Bury, Fife and Sheffield A, starting at 1.00 pm.

WINS FOR BURY AND HULL IN NORTHERN FOURS & JUNIOR LEAGUE MATCHES

Astley & Tyldesley hosted Round 4 of the Northern Fours & Junior League series at a warm and bright Gin Pit this afternoon. Plenty of rain during the week and pre match rolling, provided for a firm, damp and grippy racing surface., with plenty of good racing taking place.

Bury ran out comfortable winners of the Fours League match, with Reece Pollitt recording a 16 points maximum score and the fastest time of the day, 42.78 seconds, in heat 18. The three teams behind them had a close battle throughout, before Sheffield took second place on 44 points, with Hull finishing on 43 and A&T on 42. Heckmondwike scored 37 for fifth place, with a makeshift Stockport team finishing on 12.
