On Monday 2 November we are screening Foragers by Jumana Manna, as part of Palestine Cinema Days Around the World with Filmlab Palestine.
The film is about foraging for wild plants like za’atar and ‘akkoub in Palestine, and what happens when nature protection laws turn an inherited tradition into a punishable offence. Moving between documentary, fiction and archive footage, it follows the plants from the wild to the kitchen, and from chases with the nature patrol to the courtroom. It is made with a dry sense of humour and a lot of love for the people who carry this knowledge.
At its heart are questions about food, land, memory and who gets to decide what is kept and what is lost. It feels right at home in Longsight, where growing, cooking and sharing food bring so many of us together.
