EQUIPMENT SPOTLIGHT
The method progresses. So does your practice

One of the things we love about Classical Pilates is that there is always somewhere to go next
The Reformer doesn’t change. Your relationship with it does. As your strength, control and understanding develop, exercises can become more complex, asking more of you while still working from the same principles.
This is why progression is such an important part of the Classical method. You don’t need to arrive knowing how to do everything

You learn the foundations
You practice them
You build from them

And gradually, the work changes with you. Here is the Jay Grimes classical beginner flow on one of our lovely Gratz reformers

In our previous posts in this series find out more about what makes the Reformer such an integral part of the Classical Pilates method

EQUIPMENT SPOTLIGHT: THE REFORMER

✨ The springs

Our Classical Reformers have four springs, each providing a different level of resistance. In Classical Pilates, exercises are taught with their prescribed spring settings, unless there’s a clear reason to adapt them for the individual.

✨ The gears

The Reformer has three gear settings, allowing us to adjust the carriage position to suit different heights and accommodate individual needs, including injuries or areas of discomfort.

✨ The footbar

The movable footbar is used in a variety of exercises, providing support and a point of connection. It can also be lowered out of the way when needed.

✨ The carriage

The upholstered carriage is where much of the work takes place. The shoulder blocks help keep you positioned, while the adjustable headrest provides support depending on the exercise.

✨ The wooden handles

Connected to the carriage by the straps, the handles allow us to work the arms and shoulders against the resistance of the springs, while developing the connection between the arms and back.

✨ The silver handles

You’ll find these beside the shoulder blocks. Used in some of the more advanced exercises, they offer another way to challenge strength, control and coordination.

Every element has a purpose. In Classical Pilates, understanding the equipment is part of understanding the work.

WHY DO WE USE THE REFORMER?

One of the things we love about the Reformer is that it doesn’t simply make an exercise more difficult
It can actually help you understand the movement

The springs provide resistance, but they can also offer support. The moving carriage gives you feedback. The straps create opportunities to work with your arms and legs in ways that aren’t possible on the mat alone

Together, these elements ask you to develop strength, stability, coordination and control, while still paying attention to how the movement feels
This is part of what makes the Reformer such an important piece of the Classical Pilates system

At Loving Pilates, we teach the equipment as part of a wider method. The aim isn’t simply to complete more difficult exercises. It’s to develop your practice, step by step

And that’s why the Reformer can look very different depending on where you are in your Pilates journey

EQUIPMENT SPOTLIGHT: THE REFORMER

If you’re new to Pilates, the Reformer can look a little complicated at first
A moving carriage, springs, straps and a frame might not immediately tell you what it’s all for
But within Classical Pilates, the Reformer is a tool for developing the work, offering both resistance and support as you learn to move with greater strength and control

The springs can challenge you, but they can also help you. The carriage gives you feedback. The straps allow you to work through a different range of movement.
The exercises are not simply a collection of movements. In the Classical method, they are taught with purpose and within a structured progression

At Loving Pilates, our Reformer classes follow the Classical method and its order, giving you the opportunity to develop your practice over time

Graham Henry, former coach of the New Zealand All Blacks, was speaking about the responsibility of representing something bigger than yourself

We think the same can be said of teaching Classical Pilates

We don’t own the Method. We are here to learn it, practise it, teach it well and pass it on, making it more accessible for the next generation of students and teachers

For us, wearing the “jersey” means respecting the Method, serving our students and playing our part in leaving Classical Pilates in a stronger place than we found it

We’ve shared more about what this means to us, and our role as teachers within the Method, in this month’s newsletter, in your inbox now
