Our Junior Driver's first turn of opposition in trot, this time on an incline turn --- the wheeler is flexed ever so slightly to the right momentarily whilst the leader is flexed to the left --- the outcome is a corrected line as the donkeys are then released to correctly maintain the line of the circle. His next task will be the acute turn of opposition.

What happens when you take a turn with a tandem without a point of opposition. The wheeler starts to turn early, in the worst case scenario the wheeler would end up alongside the leader as if driving a pair. So the next skill our junior driver has to master is the turns of opposition.

Our Junior Driver driving Hapgood and Wild Thyme as a tandem. Although he is using learner leader traces they are correctly used here as the leader is out of draft, the wheeler is in draft, and both donkeys are following the correct line of the circle.

The tandem lesson. Learning to balance a tandem is difficult. The wheeler (the donkey in the shafts) does the pulling of the vehicle, the leader should merely trot on the front elegantly, maybe pulling to assist the wheeler when driving uphill. At the moment the leader is in draft which makes it hard for the wheeler to flow. A 'tickle' is a touch on the shoulder, like a leg aid in riding, it communicates with the donkey asking for a little more confidence and expression, it does not chivvy the movement on. Here the driver is having his second lesson in balancing a tandem and at the moment is learning with his experienced driving donkeys.
