Didsbury Ladies Win Mersey Shield Thriller🏆
In a dramatic finish to one of the region’s longest-running competitions, Didsbury Ladies claimed the coveted Mersey Ladies Shield after a thrilling day of golf played in wildly changeable weather.
More than 100 players from the five Mersey clubs — Chorlton Golf Club, Didsbury Golf Club, Northenden Golf Club, Sale Golf Club and Withington Golf Club — competed for the prestigious trophy, a competition that has been played for more than 65 years.
Hosted at Didsbury, players enjoyed a course presented in excellent condition despite enduring “four seasons in one day”, with heavy rain showers, gusting winds and occasional sunshine testing both patience and skill. Warm hospitality in the clubhouse afterwards provided a welcome reward following a demanding day on the course.
The competition produced high drama, with the destination of the Mersey Ladies Shield only decided by the final pairing out. Victory is determined by the aggregate score of each club’s top six pairs, creating a tense finish as scores came in throughout the afternoon.
Defending powerhouse Sale, winners in recent years, looked set to continue their dominance. Consistent performances from their strong side, led by Lady Captain Alice Connett and Sarah Roper, saw them top the leaderboard for much of the day.
However, the home side steadily mounted a challenge. Strong scores from Louise Biddlecombe and Margaret Lloyd (39 points), along with Lady Captain Bev Bevins and Judith Howarth (37), kept Didsbury firmly in contention and within touching distance of Sale.
The decisive moment came from Didsbury’s final pairing. Experienced team player Adele McNeillie and 14-year-old junior star Ewana Praveen held their nerve under pressure, producing an outstanding 41-point round to swing the competition in Didsbury’s favour.
Their superb effort secured a four-point victory for Didsbury, ending the club’s five-year wait for the trophy and also earning the pair the Top Pairs prize.
Presentations in the clubhouse were led by Mersey and Didsbury stalwart Mike Campbell alongside Lady Captain Bev Bevins, who thanked players, participating clubs, organisers and volunteers, as well as greenkeeping and clubhouse staff, for helping make the event another memorable day for Mersey ladies’ golf.

Hole 11 at Didsbury Golf Club is a tough, long par 3 with a green more suited to a shorter club than required.
A two tier green awaits even the best tee shot. A 3 is no guarantee.
