Kate L, one of our clinical managers based in the North East, has created a fantastic grid set for her client who is practising their eye gaze skills at the moment and needs a limited number of buttons per page.

‘We are using the SuperCore Learning Grids but wanted to be able to model some navigation and provide more choices so we have created a bespoke package based using the Learning Grids which will also support development into the use of SuperCore as access develops.’ - Kate L

Members of our amazing team have created a high-contrast partner-assisted scanning communication book for one of our clients, E 📖

Mia, Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, designed and developed the communication book, and with the help of Gill, one of our SALTAs, it was carefully made and put together which is a brilliant example of teamwork for E!

E indicates “yes” by blinking twice, which allows her to make choices. The book is organised into categories such as Quick Chat, I Want, I Think, Something’s Wrong, Let’s Go, and I’m Asking a Question.

A communication partner scans through the options aloud while showing E the symbols. When E hears and sees the option she wants, she blinks twice to select it. The partner then turns to the relevant page and scans through the symbols again so E can choose the message she wants to communicate.

Mia has been working with E to ensure the communication book is personalised, accessible, and meaningful supporting E to communicate effectively in her daily life.

Members of our team recently visited Bristol to attend a Smartbox Conference 😊

It was a really lovely opportunity to connect, share ideas, and spend time with others from the wider AAC community.

The event included a range of workshops and talks, with discussions focusing on symbol grid sets and Grid features. Our ATmentor, Aid team also showcased Look Lab, demonstrating how engaging and sometimes challenging it can be to use eye gaze to play. The team also took part in a fun game of human bingo, finding people who matched the descriptions on their bingo boards!

A real highlight of the conference was hearing from an AAC user named Ellise, who shared her powerful and personal life story, as well as her journey with AAC.
