We are recruiting 1 defender to complete our Sunday Squad - YEL Div 2

Woodhouse Colts faced a tough test against higher league opposition in Ashfield Athletic on a hot and very hard surface this Sunday morning.

Having drawn 2-2 in the previous meeting, we knew we were capable of competing, but with only nine players available and several lads away on holidays and trips, it was always going to be a difficult challenge.

Woodhouse started brilliantly and were completely in control for the opening 15 to 20 minutes. An excellent team move results in a free kick that was finished superbly taken by Edward to give the Colts a deserved 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately, with no substitutes available, the effort levels began to take their toll. Ashfield scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half, both of which Woodhouse will feel were avoidable one coming down the left that should have been defended and a corner that wasn’t dealt with, to take a 3-1 lead into the break.

The second half became a real struggle for the nine lads. With no fresh legs available to give anyone a rest or change the game, Ashfield grew stronger with constant subs and rotation, they played the better football and were more aggressive and fresh. Woodhouse simply could not find a way back into the game, and Ashfield eventually pulled away to secure a deserved 5-1 victory, with once again a couple of avoidable goals from a long range effort and a corner.

The result was disappointing, but there were plenty of positives from the opening stages in the game.

With a full squad and some fresh legs, it could have been a very different contest. today we have to give Credit to the nine lads who battled through a tough morning against strong opposition that will do well next season.

Oscar is quite simply one of the best goalkeepers around. An outstanding shot-stopper with lightning-fast reactions, he’s produced some unbelievable saves over the last two seasons to help us secure back-to-back league promotions and lift the YEL Cup. But he’s more than just a goalkeeper. Oscar is calm and composed with the ball at his feet, helping us build from the back, and he’s even got a penalty goal to his name! If there’s a big save to be made, you can usually count on our Number 1 to make it. 💪🧤

Jacob is a tall, powerful central midfielder who brings real quality to the heart of the team. Calm and composed in possession, he has outstanding vision and passing ability, always looking to make things happen. Defensively, he’s strong in the tackle and wins the ball back consistently, while his driving runs through midfield can leave defences on the back foot. And if you give him space outside the box… don’t be surprised to see him unleash an absolute rocket! 🚀⚽

Match Report
Kirkby Colts Reds 3-2 Woodhouse Colts Yellow

We knew today would always be a tough test against a very strong Kirkby Colts Reds side who enjoyed an excellent season last year, but there were plenty of positives to take from the performance.

Overall, the Woodhouse boys played some really good football and created more than enough chances to win the game. In truth, if we had brought our shooting boots with us, the highlights would show that we should have been comfortable winners. Unfortunately, football is decided by who puts the ball in the back of the net, and today Kirkby were far more clinical with the limited opportunities they created.

I could count their clear chances on one hand, but we gave them too much time in key moments and a couple of defensive mistakes helped them along the way. Despite that, the lads continued to play neat, attacking football and looked dangerous every time we went forward.

Our goals came from Oliver and Taylen with another header.

There were several strong individual performances:

* Brady had an excellent game at left back, including a brilliant goal-line clearance.
* Yasin performed really well both in defence and midfield.
* Edward was outstanding in midfield, driving forward with energy, winning his duels and linking play brilliantly.
* Lavar made a positive impact when he came on and looked sharp in possession.
* Taylen took his goal really well and worked hard throughout.

Player of the Match: ⭐ Edward – his all-round midfield performance, energy and quality on the ball just edged it today.

While we’d naturally be disappointed with the result if this had been a league game, it was another valuable pre-season run out against strong opposition. The performance showed once again that this group is more than capable of competing with the best sides in the YEL League, and with a little more composure in front of goal, the outcome could easily have been very different.
