What is Diastasis Recti?🤰🤱🤔
During pregnancy, the linea alba - the connective tissue that joins the 2 sides of the re**us abdominis muscles - stretches and thins so that the belly can expand and make room for the growing baby, placenta and extra fluid, this stretching tissue is what leads to space between the muscles and doming and bulging can occur when the core is under pressure
A separation of 2 - 2.5 finger width or wider is usually classed as diastasis recti (the gap may be bigger/smaller in different parts)
By the 3rd trimester, all women will have some form of diastasis recti, it varies from women to women. This means that the abdominal muscles can’t create as much force because they’re being stretched so a lot of core focused exercises become much harder!
After birth, some women still have diastasis recti, meaning the space between the muscles is still there and may still get some doming and bulging - this isn’t necessarily harmful and it’s nothing to be scared of!
There are plenty of safe core focused exercises that can be done to strengthen the muscles without putting too much pressure on them!
There’s no definitive evidence that bulging or doming makes diastasis recti worse but the tissue is already working hard enough so it makes sense to avoid excessive stress on it!
If you’re unsure whether you have diastasis recti post partum, or you’re unsure what is safe to do during or post pregnancy, drop me a message and I’d be more than happy to help🥰
