Mexborough Keep Pressure on Higham with Gritty Win at Adwick Park🏏

Mexborough Athletic CC 1st XI kept their push for a top-three finish firmly alive with a hard-fought six-wicket victory over Adwick-Le-Street CC at Adwick Park.
With just one game of the season remaining, the 12-point victory keeps Mexborough in 4th place, just four points behind Higham CC, leaving everything to play for in the final round of fixtures.
Having won the toss, Mexborough skipper Lee Jeffries had no hesitation in putting Adwick-Le-Street into bat, and the decision soon proved to be a masterstroke.
Russell and Bradley rip through Adwick
The Mexborough bowlers produced one of their best spells of the season, making full use of difficult batting conditions to dismiss the hosts for just 75 in 27.1 overs.
Boundaries were extremely hard to come by on a heavy, uncut outfield, with the recent combination of rain and sunshine making the grass particularly thick. It meant the Mexborough attack had to rely on discipline, accuracy and pressure — and they delivered exactly that.
Matthew Russell was outstanding, producing a remarkable spell of 4-14 from 10 overs, including three maidens. His accuracy and relentless pressure gave the Adwick batsmen virtually nothing to work with.
At the other end, Jonny Bradley continued the onslaught, picking up 4-17 from 7.1 overs, with several key wickets coming from beautifully delivered balls that left the batsmen with little option.
With the hosts’ innings already on its knees, Ryan Linney needed just one over to clean up the tail, taking 2-3.
The only real resistance came from Matthew Eades, who battled superbly for his 49 from 80 balls, including five boundaries. But with wickets falling regularly around him, Adwick were eventually dismissed for a modest 75.
Hughes and Addy steady the nerves
Despite the low target, Mexborough’s chase was anything but straightforward.
Opener Charlie Aston was dismissed for a duck, and when further wickets followed, Mexborough suddenly found themselves in serious trouble at 23-4.
Adwick’s bowlers, particularly Carl Newbold and Matthew Eades, deserve credit for keeping the pressure on, both finishing with two wickets.
But with the outfield making boundaries almost impossible to find, Mexborough knew there was only one way to win the game — run hard, stay patient and take the gaps when they appeared.
That’s exactly what Gareth Hughes and Stephen Addy did.
The pair put together a superb unbeaten partnership, showing tremendous fitness and composure as they steadily dismantled the remaining target.
Hughes anchored the chase brilliantly, finishing unbeaten on 40, while Addy provided excellent support with an unbeaten 20.
Their 56-run partnership completely took the game away from Adwick-Le-Street and ensured there would be no late drama.
Mexborough reached 79-4 in the 30th over, securing a crucial six-wicket victory and another valuable 12 points.
🏆 Players of the Match
There was little doubt about the standout performers of the day, with Matthew Russell and Jonny Bradley deservedly named Joint Players of the Match.
Russell’s sensational 4-14 from 10 overs, including three maidens, and Bradley’s equally impressive 4-17 from 7.1 overs accounted for eight of Adwick-Le-Street’s ten wickets.
A superb bowling performance from the pair that set up the victory.
Everything to play for
It was a victory built on outstanding bowling, followed by patience and determination with the bat.
With Higham still just four points ahead, Mexborough now know exactly what is required.
The final game of the season comes at home this Saturday against Houghton Main CC, a side Mexborough have already beaten this season.
A maximum-points victory would give Mexborough the best possible chance of finishing 3rd in Yorkshire Cricket Southern Premier League Division Seven North — although they will also need results elsewhere to go their way.
