Great Ayton Lawn Bowls Club

That’s another outdoor season over. We’ve come runners up in two leagues, retained the Captain Cook Cup, enjoyed friendly matches & teas, had some great social evenings, held internal competitions, met our MP and welcomed new members. Thanks to everyone who’s been a part of all this and made our club what it is. I must thank Margaret & Ray Hopper who are retiring from running the Afternooners after long service doing this and to the club in various positions.

There are just two dates currently in the diary, our AGM at the club at 18:00 on Tuesday 29th September and our Presentation Night at 19:00 on Wednesday 4th November at the cricket club.

Meanwhile work will continue on the green to get it ready for next season!

Just one match to report on this week, our final Cleveland Afternoon League match at home to Brotton, we took four of the six points available.

Afternooners - Tuesday & Friday 13:15 for 13:30 start and Thursday Rollup - 17:55 for 18:00 will take place this week and the green will close on Friday.

AGM Tuesday 29th September 18:00 in the club house.

As we approach the end of our season, here is what’s been going on in the last couple of weeks. Our own ‘Star Bakers’ prepared and hosted an afternoon tea when all who attended had their fill and enjoyed a nice afternoon along with raising funds for the club. Well done bakers!

Our club knock out competitions concluded this weekend when Mike Smith beat Alan Austin in the mixed singles, Diane Smith beat Avril Crisp in the ladies singles, Alan Austin beat Graeme Moir in the men’s singles and Mike & Diane Smith beat Linda Sample & Gary Johnson in the mixed pairs. Well done everyone and thanks to Bron Williams who has run all our club competitions over the season.

These results mean the we are runners up in the league with one match to play. Well done everyone who has played this season.

Our last match is tomorrow at home to Brotton.

This week will also be the last week for Afternooners on Tuesday & Friday 13:15 for 13:30 start.

Thursday Rollup 17:55 for 18:00 start.

The green will be open next week and close on the 18th September for winter maintenance.

The week started well with a win at home in the friendly against Bedale, but wasn’t the best in the Cleveland Afternoon League with only five points from three matches.

Congratulations to our Langbaugh Triples Team who came runners up in their league. They had equal points with the winners but three shots less, hence taking second place.

There is only one competitive result to report this week as the away match to Brotton Badgers was abandoned after 10 ends due to a downpour which made the green unplayable.

Cup week this week, as Great Ayton retained the Captain Cook’s Cup when we played Stokesley on Sunday and then yesterday at President’s Day, the President’s team won by 4 shots. 31 of us then enjoyed a high tea. Thanks to everyone who took part in both events.
