Whilst all eyes may have been on London for the World Table Tennis World Team Table Tennis Championships, today was an important step for grassroots girls table tennis in England as the first day of matches in the pilot Girls Cadet British Clubs League took place today.

The competition, open to under 15 girls only, is being run in four venues across England, with each of the venues hosting three matchdays. There is one venue in the South, one in London, one in the Midlands, and one in the North.

This pilot event is part of the drive to encourage more girls to take up the sport, play in a safe and welcoming environment, and get to compete against other girls of roughly the same age and ability levels. Research shows that running girls only events is very important when it comes to recruiting and retaining females in sport, and it is hoped that from this small acorn of a pilot competition played across four venues that, a solid and strong oak tree of a much bigger competition, giving more opportunities for girls to compete, will grow.
