TLDR
Hydration is often an afterthought for golfers, with emerging evidence showing the negative impacts of even mild dehydration on many areas of golf such as distance, accuracy and putting. To optimize performance and recovery, aim to consume 16oz of fluid gradually in the 2-4h pre-round, 4oz per hole, and enough to sufficiently replace lost fluid post round. Consuming carbohydrate and/or caffeine based fluids may provide additional benefits.

👀 🧐 ⛳️ Immensely proud to share some provisional data from the Goswami, Shepherd, Langdown, Knight and Maguire (2024) paper ‘Acute effects of different warm-up protocols on junior golfers’ drive performance‘ that was showcased at the World Scientific Congress of Golf at Loughborough University this week. This was 2 years in making! Full paper under review.

Does your golf coach promote you to undertake S&C activities? 💪🏻🏌️♂️⛳️
They evidence suggests they should and perhaps do, as per this research breakdown of Shaw et al. (2022). Although my personal experience of this is a conflict of interest, in that a coach may think time and money spent on S&C is best spent with them, and there is an argument for that. Although it is often especially beneficial for their higher calibre players and the additional health benefits or engaging in strength and power training are mostly overlooked.
