As the Infantino issues continue to unfold, we wanted to discuss the mounting pressure on women’s football. Important internationals are approaching for the national teams and UEFA remains steadfast in its total boycott of all FIFA competitions despite FIFA’s recent backtracking on its controversial privatisation plans. This could be a pivotal moment for the female game. While the conflict is a broader geopolitical battle between the two governing bodies, women’s football tournaments are the immediate and most affected casualties of the standoff. Since the boycott applies to all events, upcoming women’s international matches will be the very first tests of the blockade.

Women’s football advocates are deeply frustrated that the sport is being used as a pawn in this political conflict. FIFA’s original FFE commercial only mentioned women once, yet women’s teams are bearing the brunt of the resistance. The tournament timeline is facing immediate disruption, including:

- The FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup (September 2026) in Poland.

- The FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers (October 2026).

- The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup (June/July 2027) in Brazil.

Many individual players have publicly supported the firm stance against FIFA’s governance. Chelsea and England star Lucy Bronze believes a World Cup boycott could protect the sport’s long-term integrity. Prominent female executives within UEFA, including Vice-President Laura McAllister and Norwegian FA President Lise Klaveness, were key figures in initially proposing and structuring the boycott movement.
