Are you aware of the strangulation risks within your home ???
One of the most common, but easily overlooked, is blind cords
Most of us have blinds in at least one window of our home and wouldn’t think that this was an area we needed to be worried about, but dangly cords can look very appealing to little hands and toddlers can be much more mobile than we realise
Young children do not sense danger and do not have an understanding of what can happen to them
It can take just 15 seconds for a child to lose consciousness and brain damage occurs within minutes
Areas to be particularly careful with are windows that may be reached from cots or that might have toys or furniture close by that can be climbed on
It is really important to have a cleat hook or tensioner fitted to keep them safe and to use it every time
Information for making blinds safe can be found at www.makeitsafe.org.uk
Also be aware of not hanging bags with long handles or drawstrings on the end of beds or wardrobe doors or leaving dressing gowns with long cords hung on doors

👩⚕️Stethoscope - something every medic needs but that can be scary if a Childs not seen one before.
This is part of our core kit and children will use it every week so they become super familiar with what it’s used for and how it’s used.
In fact recently we had one parent telling us how their child walked through the door of the GP and took their top off ready 🤭

This First Aid Friday we are talking about the danger of magnets
Very strong magnets can cause serious damage to your child’s insides if swallowed, if multiple small ones are swallowed they can join together and make holes in the gut
Once swallowed removal can be very difficult including major surgery
Magnets are found in many places but particularly in:
Toys
Jewellery
Craft items
Fridge Magnets
‘Fake’ tongue piercings for older children
Be particularly careful of cheaper toys that may not comply with safety regulations
If you believe your child has swallowed a magnet you must take them straight to an Urgent Care centre or call 999 – DON’T DELAY as the damage can be caused within hours
Symptoms can be similar to a stomach bug or appendicitis
If you have older children talk to them about the danger of swallowing magnets
