THE SHADOW SIDE: everything in balance ☯

In Wing Chun, both sides of the body are trained equally.

Should the dominant side not be in a position to strike, become trapped or injured, you can still adapt and react without hesitation. Regularly training techniques with your non-dominant, or "shadow," side develops that adaptability.
It teaches both sides of the body to communicate and work together, rather than relying on one side to do all the work.

A martial artist who can only move effectively on one side has already lost part of their ability.

Train your shadow sideβ€”not because you expect to lose your dominant side, but because true skill means never depending on it alone. πŸ‘ŠπŸ’₯

Hands for Hands, Feet for Feet!

This evening's class explored the footwork side of Wing Chun, from effective kicking techniques to practical defences against incoming attacks. πŸ‘ŸπŸ’₯

We looked at how kicks can be used to control distance, break an opponent's structure, and create opportunities for follow-up techniques. While Wing Chun includes kicks to various levels, many of its most effective applications focus on the thigh, knee, shin, and ankle to completely destroy the opponent's foundations and structure.

The goal isn't to rely on hands or feet aloneβ€”it's learning how they work together as one complete system. πŸ‘ŠπŸ’₯πŸ‘ŸπŸ’₯

Reaction Drills 🫣

Starting a reaction drill with your eyes closed is great practice as it removes anticipation and forces you to rely on your senses, awareness, and trained responses.

Open your eyes... Assess... Decide. React.
Every movement becomes deliberate, every response controlled. πŸ‘ŠπŸ’₯

This is one of the key skills we worked on during tonight's training as well as real-world self-defence scenarios.

Kiu Sau: Bridging Hands

Rather than being a single technique, Kiu Sau is a broader concept and skill set that focuses on intercepting and then utilising arm contact to control an opponent efficiently.

B**g sau is NOT a block

Tonight’s lesson featured various partner drills where B**g Sau (Wing Arm) was put to the test!
Remembering not to fight force with force, and redirect the incoming pressure so you can remain on centre is key with this movement. Students practiced using B**g Sau to receive an attack, and then releasing back in the form of a swift backfist to give the opponent a nasty surprise πŸ‘ŠπŸ’₯

Less press-ups, more practice!
The hot weather means the explosive padwork can wait until next week πŸ‘ŠπŸ»πŸ’₯

Trying to keep cool by focusing on the details with some Dan Chi Sau and Nok Sau drilling πŸ”₯
