REPEAT INJURIES: IS THE ORIGINAL INJURY REALLY THE PROBLEM? 🐴
One of the most frustrating things for any horse owner is watching their horse recover from an injury… only for the same injury, or another injury, to happen again.
But when an injury keeps returning, we need to ask an important question:
Have we truly rehabilitated the horse, or have we simply treated the injury?
An injury can heal on the surface, while the horse may still have:
🔹 Reduced strength
🔹 Loss of muscle and conditioning
🔹 Compensatory movement patterns
🔹 Reduced range of motion
🔹 Poor proprioception and balance
🔹 Weakness elsewhere in the body
🔹 A gradual return to work that has progressed too quickly
The body works as a whole.
When one area is injured, other structures often compensate. If those compensations aren't addressed during rehabilitation, the horse may return to work appearing sound — but without being physically ready for the demands being placed upon them.
This is where rehabilitation becomes so important.
Good rehabilitation isn't simply about waiting for an injury to heal.
It's about rebuilding the horse's strength, supporting circulation and tissue recovery, restoring movement and gradually preparing the whole body for a return to work.
With the right rehabilitation programme, we can look beyond the original injury and ask:
“How do we make this horse stronger and better prepared for the future?”
Because the ultimate goal shouldn't just be return to work.
It should be return to work stronger, more balanced and better prepared to cope with the demands placed upon them.
🐴 Don't just rehabilitate the injury. Rehabilitate the horse.

The reality of equine rehabilitation 🐴
Equine rehabilitation can look simple from the outside.
“Just keep them walking.”
“Give them plenty of time.”
“Keep them quiet.”
“They’ll be fine.”
But anyone who has actually rehabilitated a horse knows it is rarely that straightforward.
Rehabilitation can be weeks or months of uncertainty, setbacks and tiny victories.
You’re constantly balancing:
🐴 Protecting the original injury while rebuilding strength
🐴 Preventing muscle wastage and loss of fitness
🐴 Managing pain, inflammation and stiffness
🐴 Keeping the horse mentally happy during restricted exercise
🐴 Gradually increasing workload without doing too much too soon
🐴 Monitoring how the horse responds from one day to the next
🐴 Working alongside vets, farriers and other professionals
🐴 Managing the expectations of owners — and sometimes the horse itself!
And perhaps the hardest part?
There isn't always a straight line from injury to recovery.
One good day doesn't necessarily mean the horse is ready to progress. One bad day doesn't always mean you've gone backwards.
Good rehabilitation is about understanding the horse as a whole, looking at the bigger picture and making informed decisions based on how they are responding.
For me, rehabilitation isn't simply about getting a horse back to work.
It's about building the strongest, healthiest version of that horse possible, reducing the risk of reinjury and giving them the best possible foundation for their future.
That takes patience.
It takes knowledge.
It takes teamwork.
And, above all, it takes putting the horse first. ❤️
What do you find is the biggest challenge when rehabilitating a horse?
