I’ve been working with Lachlan Blaikie on his S&C for around 12 weeks now and last weekend he won silver and bronze medals at the ICO World Championships in France, competing in a high-level kickboxing tournament. 🏆

Lachlan is a great example of a hardworking young athlete who, even at his age, already understands the importance of investing in his physical performance and long-term development. 📈

I’m proud of what he’s achieved and glad I can play a small part in his progress. 🏋🏻‍♀️

Big congratulations to Lachlan and his kickboxing coaches as well. The improvement since we started working together has been clear to see.

Hard work pays off ! 🫡

Neck training doesn’t take much time but the benefits can be significant. 📈

Whether you train MMA, BJJ or Muay Thai, your neck is exposed to forces from your opponent during chokes, grappling exchanges and clinch work. 📝

A stronger, more resilient neck can help you better tolerate these demands.

Training your neck twice a week, with just 2-3 sets of flexion, extension and lateral flexion performed as a superset, can be a great starting point.

Don’t be afraid to gradually load your neck and work through different ranges of motion.

A small time investment that can support your performance and longevity in combat sports. 🫡

Combat sports are contact sports, and injuries are part of the game. 🫣

You can have the best S&C programme in place but sometimes it needs to be adjusted when an athlete picks up an injury, especially if pain affects certain movements or exercises. 📝

As an S&C coach, part of my job is to respond to these situations and adapt the training programme based on the athlete’s current condition and what they can safely do throughout fight camp. 📈

It’s not about pushing through pain at all costs. It’s about making smart adjustments to get the best possible results while keeping the athlete progressing.

🏋🏻‍♀️ Full body S&C session for combat sports.

Started with movement prep and a few pogo jumps, followed by lower body and rotational power work.

Then moved into cluster sets for the squat pattern, supersetted with core work, followed by an upper body strength superset.

Finished with higher-rep accessory work targeting the rear delts and hips.

Sometimes ego lifting takes over on Instagram, and chasing numbers becomes more important than movement quality. 🫠

👉🏻 In my opinion, you don’t need a perfectly straight back or perfect knee alignment with your toes on every rep, especially when lifting heavier.

But spending time improving your movement quality before adding more weight will bring far more benefits than showing off heavy lifts with questionable technique. 🫡

📝 These are 3 common misconceptions about S&C that I think people training combat sports still have.

S&C should be a long-term investment, not just for performance, but also for your health and longevity, both in and outside of sport. 💪🏼

Regardless of your age or level, investing in a stronger, more physically capable body brings benefits that can last a lifetime. 📈

📝 A few things you need to understand if you care about improving your performance, progressing in combat sports and building a body that can handle the demands of the sport.

S&C doesn’t need to be fancy or complicated. It needs to be consistent, progressive and planned for the long term. 🫡

The goal of strength and conditioning is to develop physical qualities that support your performance: strength, power, speed, work capacity and resilience.

Your technical and tactical skills come from practising your sport. The gym should complement that work, not try to recreate it with weights.

Keep your training simple, measurable and progressive. Every exercise should have a clear purpose.

Combat sports are dynamic and unpredictable, so they require a strong, mobile and resilient core. 💪🏼

Don’t limit your core training to just isometrics, bodyweight exercises or light resistance bands. When you’re grappling or fighting on the ground, you’re constantly moving and working against the resistance of your opponent.

Don’t be afraid to load different spinal movements and build strength through a full range of motion. When progressed appropriately, loaded spinal training can be a normal part of strength training. 🫡
