Tuesday night completed - working some fundamentals with respect to guard retention that made it incredibly difficult to pass with the leg weave pass that I do all too often!

I teach my students the counters to the moves I get them with - this forces me to improve further.

Learn to move around the hips (your own, and your opponents) and your game will 10x.

Too many people are focused on what their limbs are doing, these are secondary to what the hips are doing.

38 years old, and still able to move well - most people are sitting on the couch after Mondays work day! (This was during an hours sparring on Mondays open mat in Inverness).

Tonights session: 7:45 Munlochy Village hall.... I intend on teaching how to shut down the leg weave pass specifically. (One of my A game passes).

See you on the mats. 🫑

The student teaching here didn't think he was good at learning, he was wrong.

Our white belts demonstrate a high level of knowledge - it's not about teaching them moves to replicate - it's about giving them an understanding of Jiu Jitsu so they can find their own guided route - and then giving them options to pass that knowledge onto other people.

The more you learn, the easier it becomes to learn, it also helps when you find something that constantly challenges and engages you - just like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu....

You are not a bad learner, you just haven't found the right subject.

Class session working on open guard retention.

A few open guard principles

*The legs are always stronger than the arms
**Your opponents job is to take space, yours is to create space
***The earlier your retention starts (I.E. before they have even grabbed you) the more likely it is to be successful
****Only be on your back if you have to be, not because you want to be - if your opponent is afraid to engage, wrestle up, or get up.

****( Rule 4 is true as a general principal of combat - if your opponent is on top his strikes will be effective - if you are on bottom your strikes are extremely unlikely to be effective. The rule can be broken for sport Jiu Jitsu but the most boring matches are when the top player refuses to engage the guard and the bottom player refuses to wrestle up, or get up - of you are not being held down it's a good principle to get the f**k up).

Tomorrow's class will be leg locks again for the No-Gi - looking at the 50/50 position with Lewis leading the class.

See you all tomorrow!

The "why" you do something is so much more important than just seeing the move itself.

That's why I do my best to help my students "understand" why I'm teaching certain things.

I'm not saying there is only one way, you can do the same move with more or less details, and tons of variation.

You'll see at the end how much easier it would be if I just taught a move.... But people wouldn't understand the importance of each part, the advantages and disadvantages of why I'm teaching specific things.

It's easy to teach techniques - the real skill is understanding depth of knowledge, why we do the things that we do....

And that is what I am trying to demonstrate and teach here.
