Another weekend of rugby is nearly upon us! Shout out to Gwilym who continues his progression into Regional One rugby, and great to see Sam Yates still thriving in National League One 🔥

Good luck to all our match officials who are out and about this weekend, and remember if you don’t have a game, you’ll always be welcome to go and watch some of our experienced referees do their work!

BIG NEWS

👏We’re delighted to announce a number of NLD Referees who have been selected for different RFU Refereeing programmes!

💪 Mike Gray has been selected as a candidate on the RFU Advanced Match Official Award (AMOA). This is a huge achievement which celebrates many seasons of tireless development and progress!

🥳 James Herbert will also be participating in this years AMOA. James has progressed through NLD Referees since joining us for university and we’re delighted to see him recognised with a place on the AMOA.

💪 Faye Watson continues her progression with a place on the RFU Every Rose pathway programme. Faye is already well accustomed to working with the RFU, having refereed at Twickenham already!

🙌 Annette Zhao will also take up a place on the RFU Every Rose Development programme. It’s great to see our referees take up opportunities for RFU support!

We’re so proud of all our referees and those who commit the time to develop and pursue opportunities with the RFU.

📣 We’re back… sort of!

With the season pushed back our RefWatch won’t be quite as busy as usual, but with league rugby currently set to get started at the end of September there is definitely rugby to look forward to! This week’s edition features a few scheduled warm up games and the brilliant NLD Coltsfest run by NLD Youth Council!

‼️ A special mention to Andy, Charley and Noah. Charley and Noah will be supporting Andy, their referee coach, with flags on Saturday at Nottingham Moderns. It should be a thrilling contest and a brilliant learning opportunity for two of our Dev squad referees, getting to support Andy, a former PGMOT assistant referee! Go well team 👏

☔️It won’t be long before our boots are thick with mud and our jerseys doubled in weight with the rain but until then NLD Refs are still working to support community rugby at venues where it is playable! We can’t wait for the season to kick off officially, so here’s to a brilliant 2026/27 🙌🙌

John Bradwell has officially stepped down as President after 7 years of exceptional service (and many years of non-presidential service before that!), handing the "whistle" over to Nick Mudd.

JB has been at the absolute heart of modernising NLD Refs, driving structural change at pace. Just as importantly he championed a vital focus on mental health for our members, recognising that mental wellbeing is paramount, and that a mentally prepared referee is a stronger performer on and off the pitch ❤️🧠

To honour his lasting legacy, Nick presented JB with the inaugural JB Presidential Award Pin at our recent AGM. This prestigious recognition is intended to remain a rare honour within NLD Refs, awarded solely at the President's discretion. It celebrates individuals who consistently demonstrate outstanding commitment, leadership, and service, going significantly beyond what is expected of a volunteer to make a lasting, meaningful impact on NLD Refs' culture and future. 🎖️

Thank you, John, for embodying the very best of our organisation and leaving NLD Refs in such a strong position. Welcome to our new President, Nick! 🏉

The Mental Health Friendly Clubs initiative was launched by Active Derbyshire, and aims to support sport and activity clubs in Derbyshire and the wider areas to provide a safe and inclusive environment for children and young people, as well as adults.

NLD Refs pride ourselves on the welfare assistance we offer to our members. By now being involved in this initiative we can take that support to the next level and assist more people in a wider range of situations.

The initiative will allow us to train ambassadors within the organisation to help support our members with their mental health and help maintain emotional wellbeing. If any of our current members are interested in becoming a mental health ambassador, please contact the Membership Services committee.

Martyn Thomas 1944-2026.

It is with sadness that the death of Martyn has been announced, his funeral having taken place in Wales. Martyn was a farmer who was a member and also served as chairman of NLD Refs. He became the CB rep for NLD at the RFU. He was involved in the discussion and negotiations when the game became professional. He was also a leading figure in securing England's hosting of the 2015 World Cup. He was recognised by Sir Bill Beaumont who paid his respects on the RFU website.

Our thoughts are with his family.

It’s the business end of the season 🔥

🏟️A great lineup of big games this week for our NLD Referees. Big shout out to Gwilym who leads a team of four on exchange to Staffordshire for a County Championship Match, go well team!

📣 We also have some of our NLD cup finals this week with the NLD Shield, NLD Plate and Junior plate. We’ve also got the women’s Senior shield as well, all being hosted at Ashfield!

Not long now till we blew full time on 25/26!
