Dukeries junior parkrun

Dukeries junior parkrun

With grateful thanks to Andrew Bailey of Dukeries junior parkrun in Ollerton (a different Andrew Bailey, not our old friend and parkrun ambassador)

โ€˜Twas the night before parkrun, when all through the land,
Everyone was stirring, with barcode in hand.
Signposts were hung by the corners with care,
Knowing that marshals would soon all be there.

The juniors were snuggled up in their beds,
While visions of PBs danced in their heads.
And mamma in her โ€˜kerchief, and dad in his cap,
Had finally worked out just how much they would clap.

When out on the course there arose such a clatter,
People sprang from the car to see what was the matter.
Away to the warm up they flew like a flash,
To listen to the briefing, to give it a bash.

The sun on the breast of the new-fallen snow,
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should I see,
But a spritely orange tailwalker, and junior runners before me.

A Run Director, so lively in prime,
I knew in a moment it soon must be time.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And they whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Felix! now, Robert! now, Lucy and Mia!
On, Freddie! On, Eddie! on, Olivia and Sophia!
To the top of the hill! be careful don't fall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with a mole hill, mount to the sky.
So up to the first corner the coursers they flew,
With smiles full of glee, and the tail walker too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard all the proof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the back straight juniors came with a bound.

They were dressed up like Christmas, from their head to their foot,
And their clothes were not tarnished with ashes nor soot.
Past Chaos Corner the children did sprint,
Directed the marshal with a smile and a glint.

Their eyes-how they twinkled! their dimples how merry!
Their cheeks were like roses, their nose like a cherry!
Each little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
One wore a 10 parkrun t-shirt as white as the snow.

The stump of a barcode they held in their hand,
Some even had theirs, on their wrist on a band.
Each had a red face and a faint stitch in their belly,
After passing 1k hoped legs not turn to jelly!

The marshals were fun, right jolly old elves,
And they cheered when they saw them, in spite of themselves!
A wink of their eye and a twist of their head,
Soon let them know they had nothing to dread.

They spoke not a word, but got straight to work,
And passed all the corners, then turned with a jerk.
And quickening their pace and wiping their nose,
And giving a nod, up the finish funnel they rose!

They sprang to the scanner, to them gave a token,
And away they all flew before many had woken.
But I heard them exclaim, โ€˜ere they drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

Mia couldn't make it to Dukeries junior parkrun this morning, so completed a (not) parkrun virtually to mark her 25 volunteer milestone๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ‘
Thanks to all the volunteers today in those tough conditions! ๐Ÿ’จ๐ŸŒง And well done to all the runners.

(PS. Delicious cookies!)
Great to see Dukeries junior parkrun back up and running. Theyโ€™d love to hear from you if youโ€™d like to join them!
Here's a copy of the parkrun tracker we gave out this morning that junior park runners can use to record their events? ๐Ÿ˜

It shows the milestones that can be achieved at junior parkrun as well as any 5k events they may attend. There are also a couple of fun challenges to do including Alphabet Challenge, Volunteer Challenge, Tourist Challenge and Seconds Challenge.

Just print it off, then choose favourite colours for HOME, LOCAL, TOURIST, INTERNATIONAL events as well as a colours for when it's a FIRST TIME at a parkrun and when you achieve your own PERSONAL BEST. You could even choose different colours for the challenges.

Then each time you take part at a parkrun event, colour in the relevant box to keep track of how you are doing. Sometimes you may need to be creative to add more than one colour eg if you were a first time tourist and achieved a personal best.

I bet these would look great on a kitchen fridge so that junior runners can show off their achievements ๐Ÿ…๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿ‘

Thank you for welcoming a few members of our little running club this morning, we all had a blast ๐Ÿ˜Š
The 11th day of our RED January 2020 challenge to be active every day sees Kelly from the Active4Today Sports Development team undertake a local parkrun. In Newark & Sherwood we currently have two parkrun events, at Sherwood Pines, Sconce and Devon Park in Newark and a junior parkrun in Ollerton (Sundays).

What is parkrun?
It is a 5km (junior 2.5km) run - it's you against the clock, not other competitors.

When is it?
It is held every Saturday at 9:00am. Dukeries junior parkrun is Sunday morning at 9:00am.

Where is it?
Newark parkrun - Sconce and Devon Park, Boundary Road, Newark, Nottinghamshire, NG24 4AU
Sherwood Pines parkrun - Kings Clipstone, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, NG21 9JL
Dukeries junior parkrun - The Dukeries Academy school field, Main Rd, Boughton, New Ollerton, Newark, NG22 9JJ.

What does it cost to join in?
Nothing - it's free! but please register before your first visit. Only ever register with parkrun once.

How fast do I have to be?
The aim is to have fun. Please come along and join in whatever your pace!

Apart from the obvious health benefits that running or jogging can give you, it can provide many psychological advantages too. No matter your circumstance, running can help ease your mind and get you back on the right track. Here are some positive changes that running can bring to you:

Whatever you are stressing about, getting active can significantly reduce this. Lacing up your trainers can help with relaxation, anxiety and negative thinking cycles. Running can help your body control stress and deal with existing mental tension. Long distance runs can help you solve problems that have been nagging you. Whilst shorter speed runs can reduce aggression and tension. Make running your new friend.

Nobody wants to be tossing and turning in bed late at night. Indulging in physical exercise, whether that is running or another form, can be your new way of counting sheep at night. Moderate exercise can also significantly improve the sleep of insomnia sufferers.

Running can be a fantastic way of combatting that sluggish and withdrawn feeling that is associated with depression. Regular exercise can boost your mood if you have depression, and itโ€™s especially useful for people with mild to moderate depression. Running can take your mind off worries so you can get away from the cycle of negative thoughts that feed depression and anxiety.

If youโ€™re suffering from low self-esteem in adulthood, go for a run and watch your confidence soar. Exercise releases feel-good endorphins, natural brain chemicals that can enhance your sense of well-being. Exercising in the great outdoors can also result in lowered blood pressure and increased self-esteem. Get your running shoes on and watch your confidence soar.

An invigorating run can boost creativity for up to two hours afterwards. Next time you find yourself staring at a blank page waiting for a genius idea to pop into your head, get those legs moving and refresh your body and brain at the same time by going on a jog.

No safety gear, kit or equipment to buy. All you need is a pair of trainers โ€“ remember parkrun is completely free forever!

So the next time youโ€™re having a bad day or you want that extra hour in bed, remember all the benefits your body will enjoy from getting active.

Taking care of mental health is not just for adults, depressive episodes in childhood can have a far-reaching impact well into adulthood. They can contribute to lower educational attainment, worse physical health outcomes and lower self-esteem. Children with depression are also more likely to experience episodes of depression later in life, so wouldnโ€™t it be great if we could arm them with some tools to help then to combat depression and keep them fit and healthy long beyond their teenage years.

The benefits of running for children:

โ€ข Fun!! โ€“ watch children at playtime or in the garden, kids love to run!
โ€ข Affordable โ€“ no safety gear, kit or equipment to buy. All they need is a pair of trainers โ€“ remember Dukeries junior parkrun is completely free forever!
โ€ข Easy to learn โ€“ no rules, regulations, tactics or strategies to learn, just run!
โ€ข Support other sports โ€“ running can boost aerobic capacity and core strength, which may help children improve in other sports.
โ€ข Boost confidence โ€“ in this non-competitive environment, children can set their own attainable goals, boosting confidence and help to build healthy bodies and minds.

A big well done to our fantastic parkrunners who came out this morning. The rain stopped and the sun came out. Felix came in first followed by Jonah ( who got a new P.B.) and Mia who were neck and neck right to the end. A massive thank you to all our volunteers.

๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ…Christmas parkrun update ๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ…

Old Christmas comes but once a year...

This year, Christmas Day and New Year's Day both fall on a Sunday. Parkrun UK have advised that junior parkrun events can go ahead if volunteers are available and that junior events take preference over any 5k events wishing to run a special Christmas or New Year event at their location ๐ŸŽ…
For Dukeries junior parkrun we've liaised with the Dukeries Leisure Centre and they will be closed on both Sundays so we will not have access to the defibrillator should we ever need it ๐Ÿฅน
As such we will not be holding events on Christmas Day 25th December 2022 nor New Year's Day 1st January 2023 โœ–๏ธ
This gives you and our volunteers a couple of weekends off to enjoy a lie in and time with families over the festive period ๐Ÿค—
We'll still have events throughout December, then will return in the New Year on Sunday 8th January ๐Ÿ‘

For those of you who still want to venture out to a 2k junior event or perhaps even a 5k special event, here is the list of which events will be taking place on Christmas Day and New Year's Day ๐Ÿ‘Œ
The list is being updated regularly so it may be worth confirming an event is still taking place closer to the time ๐Ÿค—

Our favourite part of the week ๐Ÿค—
Join us from 9am tomorrow morning for a hop, skip, walk or run around our course. A great way to start a Sunday ๐Ÿง๐Ÿคธ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿ‘

You can also download and print off a milestone certificate from your parkrun profile too ๐Ÿ…

Thought we'd share this for anyone curious about our course. It's two and a half laps around the perimeter of the Dukeries school playing field. It's all on grass and is obstacle free (apart from the occasional mole hill). It's nice and compact, so parents can get a good view of juniors around the entire course, with marshals at key points to cheer them on ๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ‘

Monday 10th October is World Mental Health Day. Itโ€™s well known that exercise is good for our mental as well as physical health and we are sure many of us recognise the benefits that running or walking bring. Talking about our mental health is also beneficial, so why not run, walk or volunteer with a friend on Sunday and discuss how youโ€™re feeling.

The World Mental Health Foundation is promoting a 12,000 steps a day challenge in November. More information is on the link below.
