I love history. I love the history of combat. And I’m fascinated by how culture, necessity and the people who came before us have shaped what we practise today.

This old photograph is a great example.

According to Bill Underwood’s account, as a 12-year-old boy in Liverpool in 1907, he received instruction in Jiu-Jitsu from Yukio Tani — one of the Japanese pioneers who helped introduce Jiu-Jitsu to Britain in the early 20th century.

Bill would go on to develop his own approach to practical self-protection, eventually becoming synonymous with Combato and Defendo.

For me, connections like this matter.

They remind us that what we practise today didn’t suddenly appear from nowhere.
Ideas travelled between countries and cultures. They were tested, adapted and changed by different generations and by the needs of the time.

Japanese Jiu-Jitsu came to Britain.
Men such as Tani demonstrated and taught it. People such as Bill Underwood were exposed to those methods and went on to develop their own approaches to real-world combat and self-protection.

More than a century later, we’re still part of that continuing story and that excites me.

I don’t believe history should trap us into doing things exactly as they were done in the past.

We should respect where something came from, understand why it was developed, and then continue to question, test and evolve it.

That, to me, is one of the most fascinating things about martial arts.

History gives us the roots. Experience determines how we grow.
