Another show, another qualifier for Jellybean and Frisbee

I think it was the amazing Ian Dunbar that said ‘genetics loads the gun, the environment fires it’.

Frisbee comes from an amazing breeder Marianne Raister Dunne, with proven dogs of spectacular temperament. He is terrier through and through (you should see his drive to kill a toy). She also has a cat.

Both of these factors mean he’s been set up for the best possible result for what I need from a puppy. Drive to work/train/engage but one who can live with small creatures and be trustworthy around them.

Here he is at 7 months in his first role as foster brother to my latest hand reared litter.

At 5 weeks old, this kitten is already clearly communicating to another species, and Jellybean is communicating right back.

When a cat puffs up and stiffens their tail it’s an attempt to appear bigger and more intimidating because they are scared. And did you know when a dog raises their hackles and tail erect, it’s for exactly the same reason?

Jellybean’s paw lift is a pacifying gesture of ‘do no harm’. His tail is down, unsure of the cat’s intentions and means to say ‘I’m ok if you’re ok’.

Look at JB’s face and eyebrows. He’s giving the cat the side eye. This is a space inducing gesture which indicates to the approaching creature to back off.

Our animals communicate all the time. We need to learn to listen.
