This is one of the many promo cards I received in 2025 but I thought that now is a good time to pull it out, given that we’ve just moved into the beginning of the Chinese lunar new year - the year of the Firehorse. More on that later, but thank you .photo for this lovely card!x

3 weeks ago I left a summer sunset in Titirangi, New Zealand (3rd image) and scooted over to the beautifully bleak North East of England where my elderly parents live.
It has worked out well, as over half the amazing photographers currently doing my (full) Bootcamp programme are based here too. So not too many late night calls. We had our first group call yesterday and everyone’s been briefed on prepping their treatments for their personal projects- I can’t wait to see them next week.
Meanwhile I’m bracing myself for the snow…

I always get caught out in January- it sneaks up and suddenly we’re halfway through before we started. This year I already had tons of calls booked in before Christmas, so I was plunged headfirst into work the first week back. I shared this last week- it’s 3 steps to kick off January, just in case you’re a photographer struggling to get things moving forward:

You have 1 week left to view these powerful 9 projects made in Morocco this June. The diversity of ideas and ex*****on is pretty amazing since everyone went to the same city at the same time. (Of course that's what we teach but it's great to see it in practice!)

A worthwhile read if you’re a photographer. How can you respond to this? You don’t have to become something you’re not- just find ways to introduce a ‘human-ness’ to what you make. Whether that’s personal projects with more depth or different ways of capturing flaws in humans. Perfectionism is overrated.

This weekend it seems appropriate to share this post written by Chris Armstrong at Photopolitic, which markets photographers to ad agencies. Chris has been at the coalface for many years- like myself he was an agent before creating this platform- and through his work is constantly talking to photographers and ad creatives (needless to say it's a long call once the two of us get chatting!) I'd like to think that my upcoming workshop will speak to these points, but for now, enjoy your weekend.
Working Through a Seismic Industry Shift
Lately, I’ve been hearing from more and more photographers who feel stuck, like the ground beneath them is moving and the usual paths forward no longer apply. I'm sure you've noticed, our industry is changing. While big budget ad campaigns and large-ish editorial shoots still exist, they’ve beco...

It’s so lovely to see the work my lovely clients make. I just received this gorgeous book photographed by Nicole England and published by Quadrille. This is the third book Nicole has made since the resounding success of Resident Dog, which came from one conversation we had about her ideal shoot day. What’s your ideal shoot day and how can you make it happen?

Everything I teach- whether it's finding a specific target audience, honing on on your style, or finding the single minded aspect of your personal project, is all summed up in this excellent post. People don't want perfection, they want CLARITY. https://mailchi.mp/gapingvoid/stop-being-so-right-all-the-time?
