Empire Grappling Yorkshire Winter Open 🥉🥇🥇
Almost 8 months since ACL reconstructive surgery. The rehab was full of ups, downs, setbacks and anxiety but I always had January as a target for return to competition.
For a first competition back I am very happy with 5/6 wins; the loss being in the semi final of the absolute, by an advantage with the score 4-4.
I look forward to seeing my competitors in the future and thanks to everyone at for accommodating me in rolls and drills whilst I was still rehabbing.

In 2022 an estimated 8.6 million patients in England were prescribed antidepressant medication.
That’s 15% of the population.
31% of children in England do less than an average of 30 minutes exercise a day.
25% of adults in England average less than the recommended 150 minutes of moderate exercise / week.
Recent studies have shown that moderate and high intensity exercise could have higher antidepressant effect than current antidepressant medication.
A systematic review looking to understand how GPs promote physical activity as treatment for depression found:
▪️Most GPs surveyed don’t feel they were trained in how to promote physical activity for depression.
▪️Half reported that promoting antidepressants and talking therapies was more urgent than physical activity.
▪️Some GPs reported that there weren’t enough physical activity referral schemes for patients.
▪️There may be financial barriers for patients to access these schemes.

I was grateful to return to Stoke Mandeville Hospital help with a teaching week for Buckingham medical students.
We discussed the increasing importance of diet and exercise in modern life:
▪️People in the UK are 20% less active than in 1960’s.
▪️If this trends continues, it will be 35% less active by 2030.
▪️80% of adolescents do not meet recommended guidelines for exercise.
▪️But 1/4 people say they would be more active if advised by a healthcare professional.

Disappointed to get submitted in the final whilst up on points but important lessons learnt.
Didn’t get to prepare like I’d hoped to due to a knee injury and a virus so looking forward to better performances.

Is sleep deprivation making you fat?
I believe sleep deprivation is one of the largest, and the most overlooked, cause of rising obesity.
In this series I will explain how lack of sleep affects different hormones in your body and how that impacts weight gain.
