Great to see that the use of e-cargo bikes has been boosted during the Covid epidemic. The Guardian reports (Friday 20th Jan) :

Since the first lockdown, increasing numbers of companies have started delivering their products – and passengers – on electric cargo bikes. According to a new directory, there are now almost 450 independent businesses and tradespeople across the UK transforming the sight, sound and smell of our cities and towns by delivering goods to customers using nothing but electricity and pedal-power.

“Over the course of the pandemic, the rise of businesses using e-cargo bikes for deliveries has been breathtaking,” said Helena Downey, the founder of the Bought by Bike directory. “The rise is so dramatic that this could become mainstream.”

Here at Accentuate we're cracking on with the CABIT project after the Christmas and New Year break.

First up is sorting out dates for our remaining trans-national meetings this year - we're really looking forward to hooking up with our colleagues from Spain, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy and Austria again and pushing on with finalising the training programme we're writing for e-cargo bike companies across Europe.

I'm very pleased to report that the module Accentuate has been writing for the CABIT e-cargo bike riders training course is now complete, in draft form. It's been a lot of hard work, but what a lot we've learnt about the wonderful world of e-cargo bikes and last mile deliveries......

We will spend the next three weeks reviewing and working on the 7 modules which will comprise the full course; it's all coming together now, which is very exciting!

On a much more serious note, e-cargo bikes have been used to help out during the pandemic:

Cargo bikes heroes come to action during the corona crisis

During the COVID pandemic, the CCCB collected and shared stories of local cargo bike heroes; individuals and organisations which used two-wheeled power to not only deliver essential goods but also hope to local communities.

Among stated examples, the City of Lisbon has been using five CCCB cargo bikes to distribute food and medication, while Copenhagen has been using medical cargo bikes to distribute blood and tissue samples in order to ease the strain on the medical system.

In Vienna, the book shop Musial in Recklinghausen has been using its cargo bike to not only deliver books, but also to run daily errands for their neighbours. In Hamburg, the non-profit association StrassenBLUES e.V. delivered soup and a corona information magazine to homeless people via the cargo bike startup recycleheros.

Finally, the company Urban Arrow has been working with its network in the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and the UK to provide organisations, services and medical customers with free of charge demo-bikes for the delivery of vital products.
