Benfield Beagles FC

A well-earned 2-2 draw for The Beagles this weekend in a charity match against Team North Charity Football Team to raise funds for St Oswald's Hospice.

Goals direct from a corner kick and a dubious penalty saw Benfield go in 2-0 down at half time.

With a few substitutions and renewed energy, The Beags pressed with purpose in search of a goal from the whistle to start the second half.

That goal arrived after Declan Wiseman won a 50-50 tackle in midfield and fed into debutant Lucas Cataudo's feet, who beat the offside trap and neatly slotted away a left-foot shot as defenders and the 'keeper closed in; a goal back to make it 2-1.

Shortly afterwards Benfield won a corner. Skipper Simon Cataudo's left-footed in-swinger was met perfectly by Hayden Huggard, whose powerful glancing header went in for 2-2.

Both teams pressed and played attacking football for the remainder of the game, but it was the Beagles who almost nicked a win twice in the dying minutes. Kieran McDonald's strike went centimetres wide after the slightest deflection, and Rob Cronin almost connecting to a lofted ball into the box following a corner in the last few seconds.

A draw was a fair result against a talented and experienced Team North who were a good bunch of lads.

Hayden Huggard once again claimed the MOTM award, his headed goal edging him past Liam Isherwood and Declan Wiseman.

Special mention for Lucas Cataudo, who became Benfield's youngest goalscorer at 16 years old with his expert finish.

Disappointment yesterday as The Beagles lost their first-ever cup final.

In an even game, Benfield enjoyed good spells of possession and were solid at the back, with Liam Isherwood excelling at wing back as we changed formation several times. An early goal from 25 yards gave the opposition an undeserved 2-0 lead.

Soon after, a clearance fell to Huggard, who smashed it home from 25 yards for 1-1.

The celebrations didn't last long: another top bin curler, then keeper Anth Curry was blocked as a corner went straight in, making it 3-1 to Walkergate.

Switching from a back five and pushing sweeper Simon Cataudo into midfield, we saw Sean Murphy, Andy Spoors and Hayden Huggard work hard to break up play and create chances for Thomas Winter and Jamie Reid up front.

On 35 minutes, Sean Murphy floated in a free kick, and a defender's stretched clearance looped over his own keeper to make it 3-2.

Centre backs Jordan Raisbeck and Declan Wiseman won the aerial balls well as full backs pushed forward. An injury to Owen Carlin forced a substitution, and Murphy also left with a rib injury.

After switching to 4-4-2, Benfield pushed for an equaliser in a game that stayed tight until the closing stages, when Walkergate had more of the ball and looked to play on the break.

Kieran McDonald's low drive from a tight angle hit the post; Thomas Winter's shot from the edge of the box flashed just wide. Subs Reece Palmer, Matthew Chipchase and Danny Sulaiman brought fresh legs as the pressure built.

On 89 minutes, the ball broke to Sulaiman, who poked home a dramatic equaliser — but celebrations were cut short when the flag went up, despite Benfield's protests that the ball had last touched a Walkergate player.

Thanks to everyone who came to support us last night.

There were silver linings: Liam Isherwood picked up a deserved MOTM award, and Anth Curry won the league's best goalkeeper trophy. The Beags also won the league's Fair Play award, collected by skipper Simon Cataudo — something we're proud of as we always try to play in the spirit of a social inclusion league.

Wasn't to be last night against a young and talented John Bostey FC in our last league game.

Scoreline didn't reflect the game as we enjoyed good spells of possession and passages of play – lots of positives before Wednesday's cup final.

MOTM Declan Wiseman was ran close for the award this week with Liam Isherwood and Hayden Huggard again having very solid games.

It's not all bad though, as we enjoyed a pint and good craic at The Millstone, Gosforth afterwards, where we drew the results of our football card.

A big squad with lots of options today as we play John Bostey FC, who sit above us in second place, at Walker Dome to finish up a decent summer league campaign.

Still one more cup game to play, and let's not forget our first charity game of the summer against Team North Charity Football Team at Druid Park on Saturday
