I know what you’re thinking 🤔 Beth how could possibly say that. Pilates is amazing to help back pain or any other injury.

Trust me I know you’re right but when done incorrectly it can actually be just as dangerous as any other form of exercise.

So here are my thoughts 💭
1. Instructors don’t understand injuries enough to be able to modify movements to suit clients.

2. There is also no basic understanding of the biomechanics of human movements for movements like a bridge which then leads to people getting back pain.

3. Everything is rushed so thus not developing any real connection with mind and body and causing potential injury.

4. We seem to be forgetting where Pilates came from and why it was originally developed. Joseph Pilates created Pilates to help rehabilitate injured soldiers during the war. It was only later that it branched out when he moved to New York but the principles always remained the same.

5. The basic principles are not the focus of the class

6. Clients are not being guided as to which muscles they should be working and where they should be feeling it and not feeling it.

7. There’s to much focus on looking good for social media instead of actually correcting clients and focusing on their needs.

I’m all for Pilates growing and developing but not at the risk of it becoming diluted from where it originally came from. A Pilates HIIT class is not Pilates. I said it!

What’s your thoughts?

THE ULTIMATE BEFORE & AFTER: One Year of Sweat, Steel, and Support 💖

Swipe to see the unbelievable transformation of our studio space—from an empty shell to the beautiful home of our community. It’s been one intense, rewarding year!

(The Lessons)

Building this studio taught us three non-negotiable truths:

Always be grateful for family, friends, and a good partner: Their support truly built this foundation.

Be proud of your accomplishments: Pause, look back at the ‘Before,’ and celebrate how far you’ve come.

Never be afraid to try something new: Taking the leap into the unknown was the best decision we made.

To everyone who has been part of our community—thank you for making this dream thrive! 🙏

My client Catherine has been coming to us for many years now but in the last year and a half she developed a condition called……

Presbyvestibulopathy

This cause the crystals in the ear to come out of place with symptoms like imbalance, unsteady gait, blurry vision and vertigo attacks.

Her symptoms become worse when she lies down flat. We already have headrests and pillows to elevate the head but that wasn’t enough.

After playing around with a couple of wedges and head pillows this was what we found worked the best. Now she can exercise comfortably and not get any of the symptoms and she just avoids any exercises that would cause her head to tip back over.

This is what I means to find a studio and instructor who can work with your symptoms. These types of symptoms might be more rare but no less important when it comes to helping people.

Being able to see the finer points within a movement are what are key to becoming an even better instructor.

Training the eye to see where someone could easily make make a movement better and favour the client sets you above from the rest.

The simple version would be to just come into four point kneeling and send the leg out.

The more complex versions would be to
1. Lift chest up, ribs up, cores engaged ( belly towards spine)
2. Keep the arms straight always lifting away from the carriage/mat
3. Take an in breathe to prepare on the out breathe lengthen to send the leg away keeping it low and long
4. In breathe to bring the leg back in
5. As you lengthen the leg focus on wrapping from opposite shoulder to hip like wearing a seatbelt.

What we want to work on is:
1. Not swaying the hips side to side and the leg lengthens
2. Not shortening the waist as the leg lengthens
3. Not Lifting the leg up
4. Queuing breathing!

All of this and so much more!

I kind of like the idea of a double ended reformer to workout with your friend 🤣 although not sure I want to look at them.
