Results from the past week.

Another week has come and gone in the blink of an eye which saw six wins, one draw and three losses for our sides. Hopefully it is still Monday by the time I finish this report, but first things first get that kettle on, find a Nestle treat and get comfortable and let’s look back at the week that was.

Under 9s 2 Innings a side of 8 overs each starting at 200 runs.
Our Under 9s on Saturday morning made the short trip to face Audley where we won the toss and bowled. Audley in their first innings made 261 for 2 to give them a net score of 251 with a wicket each for Beatrice Dalgarno and George Rhodes and in reply we made 242 for 2 for a net score of 232, Harry Scott Wright top scoring with 12. In the second innings Audley made 276 for 6 for a net score of 246, Beatrice with two wickets and there was a wicket each for Ronnie Currie, George Rhodes and Max Mackintosh. Our final innings saw us make a real go of knocking off Audley’s score with Joshua Jackson top scoring with 15 not out assisted by Harry with 11 not out and Beatrice with 6 not out but unfortunately it wasn’t enough as we finished with a net score of 240 meaning we fell 25 runs short. Still a good game to be involved in.

Under 9 Girls 2 Innings a side of 6 overs starting at 200
No game this week for our under 9s.

Under 11 Girls 8 a side and 16 overs starting at 200
No game this week for our under 11 girls.

Under 11 Bears 8 a side & 16 overs starting at 200 runs.
Our Under 11 Bears on Monday were at home to Newcastle where we won the toss and bowled. Our bowling wasn’t for once at its best as we allowed Newcastle too many free runs as they amassed 291 for 0 from their overs, Kai Hartshorn was probably the best bowler on show only going for six runs from his three overs. In reply we needed a big effort from our batters, but our innings never really got going as we finished with a net score of 219 having lost six wickets. Tough game against tough opponents who are top of the league. Always next time.

Under 11 Panthers 8 a side & 16 overs starting at 200 runs.
Our Panthers on Monday welcomed Porthill with us winning the toss and bowling. Archie Birkin made the breakthrough in the fifth over, followed by a wicket for Seth Bacon and Oliver Butler over the next couple of overs. Archie Wakelin then took a wicket in the tenth over followed by one for Harry Scott-Wright in the very next over and a second one for Archie Birkin and Seth Bacon towards the end as Porthill finished with a net score of 263. In reply the first four overs went by without incident before our run rate started to pick up during our second pairs stay at the crease which was continued by the third pair with Orla Bacon making 9 not out and Archie Birkin 15 not out. We went into the final four overs still having not lost a wicket which set it up nicely for Archie Wakelin and Seth Bacon to have some fun. Archie once again in the runs this week with 23 not out and Seth Bacon making 15 as we finished with a net score of 331. Great effort with the ball and bat which saw us win by 68 runs.

Under 13s 11 a side & 25 overs.
Our Under 13s on Sunday morning with a number of players missing made the short journey to face Betley, where we won the toss and bowled. Our bowling from the off was on the money with Vedith Nanjaiah taking a wicket with the first ball of the match and then Olly Mackintosh in the second over, took two in two balls including a good catch from Edward Goodwin to make the score 11 for 3. Callum McKinon a few overs later took our fourth, thanks to a good high catch from Archie Wakelin to make the score 38 for 4 in the sixth and then Archie then took a wicket of his own with a good spell of bowling. Our sixth wicket was taken by Noah Mackintosh who also produced a good spell of bowling to make the score 52 for 6 in the tenth. Runs continued to flow for the next seven overs until Oliver Butler broke the partnership and in his next over, he was rewarded with a second for a good spell. Archie Wakelin returned for a second spell and took his second wicket and then the final wicket saw their number eleven try and take a single to Olly Mack who was having none of it and stuck with a direct hit to bowl Betley out for 153 . Great effort with the ball on a small ground. In reply we lost our first wicket in the fourth over which brought Larry Turner to the crease, play straight were the words whispered to him. First ball, six over mid-wicket for him but a few overs later after a couple of nice shots Larry was gone for 12 followed by another quick wicket to leave us 39 for 3. The ninth over saw us lose our fourth wicket which was Noah Podmore who had opened the batting for the first time and batted well as he made a solid 10 off 22 balls. Noah Mackintosh was now at the crease and opened his account with two boundaries while at the other end we lost our fifth wicket. Callum McKinon now arrived at the crease as he and Noah batted well for the next six overs as they moved our score along to 71 when Callum was out. Noah was now joined by cousin Olly Mack as they looked to keep us moving forward. The twentieth over came round with the score on 87, Betley finally managed to get one past the defences of Noah Mack who had played so well for his 26 off 36 balls and really held things together in those middle overs. Olly Mack was now joined by Archie Birkin and the two of them comfortably saw out the remaining overs to see us secure the draw as we finished on 105 for 7, Olly Mack playing some lovely shots including a well hit straight drive along the floor for four as he finished 18 not out off 31 balls and Archie with 4 not out off 19 balls. Four unbeaten now and this team goes from strength to strength. Love it.

Under 15s 11 a side & 20 overs.
Our Under 15s match last week was pushed back a week.

Under 17s 11 a side & 20 overs/100 competition
Our Under 17s on Tuesday last week with a few players missing made a visit to Norton-in-Hales where we won the toss and bowled. Norton-in-Hales for the first ten overs made a good start without losing a wicket, that was until Euan Sheperd made the breakthrough which was followed soon after by a wicket for Adriel Felsinger to make the score 59 for 2 in the thirteenth over. Euan Sheperd took his second and our third a few overs later and then Ole Davies-Majer took a wicket with the last ball of the innings. Decent bowling performance that restricted Norton-in-Hales to 91 for 4 from their overs. In reply Euan and Ole opened and put on 32 inside the first six overs when Euan was gone followed by Ole in the next over for 23 with the score 36. Lucas Bedson and Charlie Griffiths now came together at the crease and batted well as they ran well and put the bad ball away which saw both of them finish on 29 not out as we won the game with over two overs to spare. Great performance which puts us top of the pile.

Ladies Team 16 overs/8 a side/Batters in pairs for four overs each.
Our Ladies on Thursday were away at Bignall End where we won the toss and batted. Beth McGowan and Lizzie Gething opened and got us off to a good start with 35 on the board for the loss of just one wicket, with Beth making 24 not out. Our second pair of Becky Birkin with 7 not out and Nicola Mackintosh 5 not out continued our fine start as they added a further 22 runs for the loss of no wickets. Our third pair to arrive at the crease were the Saive sisters who added 23 runs together, with Ellie in the mood early on with two boundaries from her first two balls. We lost a couple of wickets the following over but were soon back on track. Our final pair of Denise Shirley and Lucy Holdcroft added another 25 runs for the loss of just one wicket, Denise making 9 not out as we finished up with a net score of 285. In reply Lucy took a wicket in her first over followed by Lizzie with one a couple of overs later. Runs started to flow for Bignall End until Daisy Saive took our third wicket and five overs later, she had a second to put a dent in Bignall Ends run chase. The final few overs saw no more wickets fall as we kept it tight as Bignall End finished with a net score of 247. Another good win for our Ladies.

Saturday
1st XI 50 Overs & Win/Lose/Draw
Our 1st XI on Saturday made the short drive to face neighbours Silverdale who won the toss and stuck us in. We lost our first wicket in the fifth over and a second wicket in the twelfth which was Charlie Griffiths for 12 to make the score 31 for 2. Tom Warburton now joined Dan Redfern in the middle as they looked to push us on against some decent bowling from Silverdale on a helpful wicket for bowlers. They moved the score to 97 when Dan was our third wicket to fall for 51 in the thirty first over, which was followed by another wicket a few overs later to make the score 116 for 4 in the thirty fourth over. Two overs later Warbs was gone for a very well-played 56 to make the score 131 for 5. Yohan Maddege was now at the crease as he looked to get us some late runs, he with the tail guided us to 171 all out as he finished 24 not out. Decent effort against some good bowling. In reply early wickets as ever were needed and Dan Gibbs and Matt Johnson obliged with a wicket each inside the first five overs to make the score 19 for 2, which soon became three down with another wicket for MJ. Silverdale needed a period of stability but with the introduction of the league’s leading wicket taker it would always be tough as Yugie picked up his first wicket and then a few overs later he had a second to make the score 64 for 5. Yugie then removed their Pro for his third wicket, but we had to wait thirteen overs for our next wicket which fell to the returning Dan Gibbs who broke the partnership that was developing. Yugie then took his fourth wicket without the score moving to make the score 107 for 8 and a few overs later Gamindu Kanishka who up to that point had been having a quiet game by his standards took the final two wickets to bowl Silverdale out for 121. Great hard-fought win which keeps us top of the table.

2nd XI 40 Overs & Win/Lose/Draw.
Our 2nd XI on Saturday welcomed Endon as we looked to open up a gap between us in second and them in third, we won the toss and bowled. We made a great start with two wickets in the first few overs with one for Liam Bedson and one for Benj Shirley to make the score 1 for 2 after two overs. Fifteen overs now went by as Endon looked to recover from that bad start, and it was Joe Tomkinson who made the breakthrough to make the score 61 for 3. Ali Gething a few overs later took our fourth wicket and then soon after he had a second and our fifth to make the score 98 for 5. Our sixth wicket came through Chris Sheperd and a catch on the deep mid-wicket boundary from Benj and six overs later after Shep was hit for two successive sixes he had his man bowled to make the score 159 for 7. Ole Davies-Majer finally ended the stubborn resistance of their number four and then the final over saw a run out for Tom Blackwood as Endon finished on 168 for 9. Decent effort with the ball, now for a bat. The first couple of overs went by without issue but we then lost two quick wickets to leave us 17 for 2 by the sixth over which brought Benj and Shep together in the middle. The two of them started watchfully before they started to up the run rate and by drinks, we had reached 79 for 2. The twenty seventh over saw Benj depart for 48 with the score 108 which brought Liam Bedson out to join Shep. The two of them after a quiet next few overs got us moving again with Liam making 16 before he was out with the score 155. Dave Speakman was next in as he tucked away a couple of boundaries which saw us over the line with an over to spare. Shep finishing 76 not out and Speaky 9 not out to clinch a crucial big win.

Sunday
1st XI 40 Overs & Win/Lose/Draw
Our Sunday 1st XI welcomed Alsager in what turned out to be a great game, we won the toss and batted. Charlie Griffiths and Gavin Felsinger opened and put on 46 when Charlie was gone for 20. Charlie Blackwood was now out in the middle as he and Gav moved the score to 75 when Gav was gone for 28 with Charlie following a few overs later for nicely played 36. Isaac McDonald next in made a brisk 21 before he was our fourth wicket to fall with the score 139 in the twenty seventh over and a few overs later Warbs was gone for 23 to make the score 150 for 5. Two more wickets fell over the next few overs including Adriel Felsinger for 11 with the score now at 175 in the thirty third. Ole Davies-Majer was batting well and he together with Dave Griffiths pushed us past 200 with Griff out for 18 in the final over as we finished on 230 for 8 with Ole finishing 37 not out from 32 balls. Great effort. In reply Ole struck with his first ball and then Warbs took our second to leave Alsager 4 for 2. Alsager’s three and four now looked to build a partnership and for a while it looked like it might not be our day as they went past a hundred for the loss of no more wickets. Adriel made the breakthrough followed by a couple of wickets for Isaac McDonald which put us in control again. Isaac then grabbed himself two more wickets before some nervy moments created by their number eight who got fifty and edged them closer. Liam Bedson was brought on for a bowl and within four overs he had dismissed their number eight and finished off the innings with the final two wickets to bowl Alsager out for 217. Great game for the neutral and another impressive win for the team.

2nd XI 40 Overs & Win/Lose/Draw
Our Sunday 2nd XI was in for a bit of a rough time on Sunday, having lost players to the Sunday 1st XI, Friday morning two players dropped out who we managed to replace, but then two more pulled out Saturday night/Sunday morning with no one available to replace them, which meant the nine men had to face top of the league Hanford at Hanford, oh the joys. We won the toss and batted first with Zac Hartshorn and Euan Sheperd in good touch before Hanford’s mystery spinners got to work on a more than helpful track as they removed Euan for 16, followed by Zac for 33 and the rest falling quite quickly with only Joe Podmore resisting with 12 as we were all out for 75. In reply Hanford knocked off our score very quickly. Enough said and one to forget shall we say.

This week in our juniors our Under 9s are at home to Alsager on Saturday morning, our Under 11 Panthers are away at Silverdale tonight with our under 11 Bears at Woore. Our Under 13s on Sunday morning welcome Audley and our under 15s should have been at home to Woore tonight but they have had to pull out due to holidays kicking in, but our 17s are in action on Wednesday at home to Newcastle.

In the seniors the Ladies have a home game Thursday night against Porthill and on Saturday our 1st XI welcome Endon with our 2nd XI away to Cheadle 3rd XI. Finally just the one game on Sunday which is a rearranged game for the Sunday 1st XI who travel to Moddershall to face Sport Asia.

So that’s all for this week, our Saturday teams go marching on and will hope to continue their form into Saturday.

Results from the past week.

We have reached Monday again after another lovely week of weather, with some good cricket being observed with six wins, three losses and a Ladies Tournament to report on. So, get that kettle on, grab yourself a treat of the highest quality and let’s see who did what.

Under 9s 2 Innings a side of 8 overs each starting at 200 runs.
Our Under 9s on Saturday welcomed Kidsgrove who won the toss and batted. Kidsgrove made 236 as a net score in their first innings, and we were in fine form with the bat as we replied with a net score of 299. Seth Redfern and Nikhil Pillai both made 16 not out, Billy Brian made 14 and George Rhodes made 10 not out. Kidsgrove in their second innings made a net score off 223 with a wicket each for Seth, George and Nikhil and our second innings saw our batting shine once again as Nikhil top scored with 24 not out to make it a really good day for him and he was supported by Spencer Seneviratne with 17 not out, Harry Scott-Wright with 12 not out and Billy with 11 not out as we won by a mammoth 121 runs. Great stuff and back to winning ways.

Under 11 Girls 8 a side and 16 overs starting at 200
Our Under 11 Girls also weren’t in action.

Under 11 Bears 8 a side & 16 overs starting at 200 runs.
Our Under 11 Bears on Tuesday were away at Betley where we won the toss and decided to bat. It’s very rare that so many players on the same night all contribute with the bat, but as a result we were treated to a batting masterclass from our Bears. Noah Podmore with 15 and Archie Birkin with 12 not out got us started with some solid batting at the start, the Mackintosh cousins of Noah with 14 not out and Olly with 16 not out pushed our good start further. Max Mayor then came in pressure off and top scored with 19 and then he was followed by Fin Matthias with 15 not out and Matthew Fish with 10 not out to finish things off nicely that saw us finish up with a net score of 321, really great effort. In reply Olly Mack wasted no time in adding wickets to his runs with three in his first two overs, not to be outdone though, cousin Noah took two in his first over to put Betley firmly on the backfoot. Fin Matthias then popped up with a wicket and a few overs later Archie Birkin took one followed in the next over by one for Orla Bacon. As the final overs ticked round Noah got himself a third wicket, there was a run out and then Matthew Fish finished things off with two wickets of his own which saw Betley finish with a net score of 212. Olly Mack with 3 for 6 from two overs and Noah Mack with 3 for 19 from his three overs were our leading bowlers. Quite possibly the most complete performance with everyone contributing with runs and wickets as we won by 109 runs. Top stuff from our Bears.

Under 11 Panthers 8 a side & 16 overs starting at 200 runs.
Our Under 11 Panthers on Monday welcomed Silverdale where we won the toss and bowled. Josh Jennings opened and took a wicket in his first over which was his first for the Club well done Josh. We had to wait eight overs for our next one which fell to Vedith Nanjaiah, and after waiting so long we then had three in three overs with one each for Roshan Pillai, Molly Haines-Martin and Harry Scott-Wright. Roshan had further success with two more wickets near the end which saw Silverdale finish with an impressive net score 298, Roshan pick of the bowlers with 3 for 15 from his three overs. In reply Roshan continued his good game with a solid 12 not out at the start and although we lost a few wickets in the middle overs last pair of Max Mayor with 12 not out and Vedith with 9 ensured we finished ahead of Silverdale with a net score of 313. Another great performance from our under 11s which saw us win by 15 runs.

Under 13s 11 a side & 25 overs.
Our Under 13s had a free week this week.

Under 15s 11 a side & 20 overs.
Our Under 15s on Monday last week welcomed Newcastle where we won the toss and batted. Adriel Felsinger and Max Panagi opened and started well with 50 on the board after seven overs, but with the score 56 we lost Adriel for 30 in the ninth over. Joe Podmore came in at three and showed his intent with two fours in his first few balls but the next over we lost our other opener Max for 16. Charlie Blackwood now arrived at the crease, and he and Joe pushed the score along until Joe was next to go four overs later for 28 off 19 balls followed two overs later by Jude Norcup for 12. Charlie Blackwood a few balls later retired with a good 36 and after the loss of another wicket Rian Waterhouse came out to bat. Rian hit his second ball for four and his third ball for six as he pressed home our advantage with a quick 25 off 14 balls before he was our next wicket to fall in the final over as we finished on brilliant 181 for 6. In reply Zac Hartshorn took two wickets in his first over with one a stumping for Jude. Ethan Mason took three quick wickets in the middle overs as he finished with impressive figures of 3 for 5 from four overs and there was also time for a wicket from Dan Convey and Rian Waterhouse as Newcastle’s innings never really got going as they finished on 53 for 7 at the close to see us win by 128 runs.

Under 17s 11 a side & 20 overs
Our Under 17s on Wednesday welcomed Silverdale where they won the toss and batted. The first five overs went by without incident until Zac Harthorn made the breakthrough thanks to a catch from Rian Waterhouse and Fin Waterhouse picked up a wicket at the end of the seventh to make the score 43 for 2. They were the only wickets we took though as Silverdale to their credit batted well with their opener and number four adding 80 which took them to 131 by the close. In reply we needed to bat well but made a bad start with us two wickets down inside the first few overs. Fin Waterhouse was now joined by Charlie Blackwood with Charlie counter attacking with three boundaries in his first six balls. The two of them took the score to 61 when Charlie was gone for 24 off 18 which brought Euan Sheperd out to bat as he and Fin stuck around to take us past a hundred. Euan was next to go for 13 which brought James Convey out to bat and as he and Fin edged us closer. Fin soon after retired for a well-played 50 which brought Zac out to bat and after he had given the strike to James, he hit three fours to see us home with two overs to spare as he finished 18 not out. Great win and run chase from the team with our batting line up tested this week.

Phoenix Team 8 a side of 15 overs.
Our Phoenix team completed their season with an away trip to face Newcastle where we won the toss and batted. Fin Waterhouse and Gavin Felsinger both started well and reached 20 before they were both out, Tom Warburton made 10 and there were some late runs from Ali Gething with 24 including a well hit six that saw us finish on 95 for 5 from our overs. In reply Warbs and Fin with two wickets each reduced Newcastle to 40 for 4 to give us a chance. Dan Forrester took our fifth wicket with the score at 76 but that though was as good as it got as Newcastle scored the required runs to get over the line. Good experience for our younger players this season who will no doubt have benefitted from it.

Ladies Team 16 overs/8 a side/Batters in pairs for four overs each.
Friendly Wood Lane
On Thursday last week we had a friendly away at Wood Lane as a warm up for the Softball Tournament, we batted first and saw some great partnerships. Our first pair of Rachael Pillai and Lizzie Gething put on 32 losing just the one wicket with Lizzie making 22. Our second pair kept the scoreboard ticking over losing just the one wicket as they added another 11 runs to our score. Our next pair of Sue Morris and Deb Warburton combined to score 29 runs losing just the one wicket and our final pair of Louise Mayor and Denise Shirley added 37 without losing a wicket as we finished on 109 for 3 for a net score of 94 with Denise making 27. Great effort and now for a bowl. Wood Lane batted well in reply with us only taking one wicket which fell to Denise as Wood Lane finished on 117 for a net score of 112. Great game and good preparation for Sunday.

Softball Tournament at Kidsgrove
On Sunday our Ladies were involved in another Softball Tournament which was another great day for the Redbirds. In game one we faced Rode Park who we hadn’t managed to beat yet in any of our previous five attempts. We batted first with our first pair of Lizzie Gething and Beth McGowan putting on 24 without losing a wicket, Beth making 12. Our second pair of Amy Lawrence and Emily Whittingham added a further 12 runs without losing a wicket to make it a great start. Our third pair continued our scoring without losing a wicket as Nicola Mackintosh and Becky Birkin added another 23 runs with Nic making 14. This set it up nicely for our fourth pair and like those before them didn’t lose a wicket as they added a further 17 runs with Denise making 12 as we finished up on 276 for 0. Top effort against a good bowling and fielding side. In reply Rode Park made 271 for 1 with the one wicket falling to Beth to secure us a great win and our first against Rode Park. Great start for the Redbirds.

Our second game was against home opposition in Kidsgrove B, we batted first with our first pair Lizzie and Beth once again making it a good start for us, Beth making 14 and Lizzie 12. Our second pair kept the runs coming with 15 coming off overs 5-8 thanks to Sue and Charmaine Cameron-Reale. Our third pair between them made 29 with Lucy Holdcroft making 15 losing two wickets and then our fourth pair added 34 with Denise making 23 including three consecutive sixes as we finished up 104 for 2. In reply Kidsgrove went out to bat but good fielding and bowling allowed us to restrict Kidsgrove to 35 for 5, Lou Mayor and Beth with a wicket each and there were two strikes for Denise as we topped our group to book a place in the final against Alsager.

The final saw us face Alsager who had topped their group, we batted with our first pair of Lizzie and Beth making 17 runs for the loss of one wicket and our second pair of Amy and Emily adding another 18 runs for the loss of one wicket. Our third pair of Nicola and Becky added 13 more runs losing just the one wicket and then our final pair of Lou and Denise added another 13 runs for the loss of one wicket as we finished up on 51 for 4 against some very good bowling. In reply Alsager batted well as they made 75 for 4 by the close with a wicket each for Lizzie, Beth, Nicola and a first ever wicket for Emily. Despite Emily winning Champaigne/Prosecco moment of the day we lost by 24 runs.

Saturday
1st XI 50 Overs & Win/Lose/Draw
Our 1st XI on Saturday welcomed Congleton in the first match of the second half of the season, they won the toss and batted. Gamindu Kanishka opened and was celebrating with just the second ball of the match as he trapped one of their openers LBW and seven overs later, they were two down thanks to a wicket for Matt Johnson. Gammy a couple of overs later got his second and our third to make the score 30 for 3 which soon became 31 for 4 thanks to a second wicket for MJ. Congleton required a rebuild but with no let up from our bowlers it was Yohan Maddege who struck next with some good glove work from Lee Jervis. Yugie soon had his second wicket to make the score 60 for 6 and Yugie was at it again a couple of overs later to put them seven down for 70. Yugie was well and truly into his groove bowling so well that he had another before long with another catch behind for Jerv and the wickets continued for Yugie as he finished off their innings quite quickly with the final two wickets to bowl Congleton out for 89 and finish with figures of 6 for 21 from just over nine overs. Top effort Yugie. In reply Congleton weren’t about to roll over as they took two wickets in the fourth over to leave us 2 for 2 and then 25 for 3 with the dismissal of Charlie Griffiths for 10. Tom Warburton and Gammy now came together as they batted sensibly taking the score to 60 when Warbs was out rather unluckily for 21 to make the score 60 for 4, which soon became 66 for 5. Gammy though was going nowhere and together with Yugie they scored the required runs to win the game with Gammy finishing the game off with successive sixes to finish a valuable 44 not out and Yugie 9 not out. Good solid win which keeps us top of the pile.

2nd XI 40 Overs & Win/Lose/Draw.
Our 2nd XI on Saturday faced an away trip to top of the league Caverswall, where the opposition won the toss and bowled. We made a bad start with wickets going down in the second, fourth and seventh over to leave us 39 for 3 and with the loss of Tom Blackwood for 13, meant we slipped to 45 for 4. Things didn’t get any better with us losing a wicket with the score 55 and then a sixth with the score 66. Martin Mason had stuck around and tried to repel everything that was thrown at him, but he was our next batter to depart for 27 to make the score 94 for 7. Adriel Felsinger and Liam Bedson were now at the crease together as they took us past a hundred, but with the score at 114 we lost Liam for 17 then another quick wicket before we were all out for 126 with Adriel finishing 24 not out. Not a great showing with the bat and we would have to bowl very well to have any hope. In reply Fin Waterhouse struck very early this week with his very first ball to give us a great start. The first nine overs we kept it tight but after that runs started to flow more easily as Caverswall recovered. The fifteenth over saw Ali Gething take a wicket and then a few overs later Chris Sheperd took two in two balls to show possible signs of a Caverswall wobble. Shep took a third wicket a few overs later, but we had run out runs to play with as Caverswall knocked off our score for the loss of no more wickets. Disappointing performance meaning we have a big game next week now.

Sunday Talbot Cup 1st Round 40 overs a side
Our 1st XI was in action on Sunday in the Talbot Cup against Newcastle as well as competing for the Dennis Elliott Memorial Trophy with a good size crowd in attendance, they won the toss and batted. Newcastle had reached the tenth over when they lost their first wicket which fell to Yohan Maddege and he was celebrating again in his next over to make the score 50 for 2. Tom Warburton now on for a bowl in the next over was on it from the word go with two wickets in two balls helped by a sharp catch from Dan Gibbs to make the score 51 for 4 and put Newcastle on the backfoot. Three overs later Warbs had his third to make the score 80 for 5 and Warbs in his next over made the score 90 for 6 in the nineteenth to make it a great first twenty overs. Newcastle spent the next twelve overs trying to rebuild as they went past a hundred before losing their seventh wicket with the score at 118. The very next over saw a decent spell from Liam Redfern rewarded with a debut wicket to make the score 126 for 8 as we looked to finish off their innings. Newcastle though aren’t a Prem A side for nothing, and their lower order dug in to try and get them to a decent target. We took a ninth wicket in the final over, but Newcastle had made their way to 179 for 9 at the close. Good effort from us with the ball but chasing maybe forty runs more than we should have been. In reply Rich Walker made his intent clear with three boundaries in his first four balls before he was bowled soon after. We lost a second wicket in the ninth over with the score on 47 but then for twelve overs everything was calm as Charlie Griffiths and Tom Warburton set about their task of keeping things ticking over. The eighteenth over saw Warbs depart for 21 with another wicket following soon after to leave us 91 for 4. Benj Shirley now joined Charlie and for eleven overs kept things moving with Charlie bringing up his first fifty for the 1st XI , well done Charlie. Soon after we lost Benj for 16 and then Charlie’s long stay at the crease was over for 55 to leave us 140 for 6. After that we lost our last four wickets quite quickly as we were bowled out for 145 in the thirty ninth over. Great effort from the team, our quest for Talbot Cup glory will have to wait another season. Congratulations to Newcastle on their retaining of the Dennis Elliott Memorial Trophy with a plenty of people around remembering the great man Dennis on a lovely day played in the right spirit.

This week in our juniors our Under 9s are away at Audley, our Under 11 Bears are at home tonight to Newcastle with our Panthers at Onneley to face Porthill. Our Under 13s are away at Betley on Sunday morning with our Under 15s due to be play Wednesday against Audley but this game has been put back due to the small matter of an England Semi-Final. Our Under 17s have brought their game forward to Tuesday away at Norton-in-Hales.

In the seniors our Ladies are in action away at Bignall End on Thursday. The 1st XI is away at Silverdale on Saturday with our 2nd XI at home to Endon, and then on Sunday our Sunday 1st XI is at home to Alsager with our Sunday 2nd XI away at Hanford.
