Mayobridge 2-2 Bryansford 2-4

Our U16 girls made the trip to their league rivals Mayobridge on Saturday morning needing a victory to clinch the title.

The hosts — last year’s Championship finalists & current top scorers across all U16 divisions — brought the very best out of the Bryansford defence the last time the sides met. The girls knew they would have to scramble bravely to stand any chance, and on the day the defending was nothing short of heroic. Ruby was immense, setting the tone with a series of fully extended blocks while Meabh seemed to sprout wings to deny a certain goal (amazing what’s possible when there’s no need to stick the landing!). Claudia held firm at full-back, freeing Maisie to be everywhere all at once as usual, while Caitlin and Fiadh played their wing-back roles flawlessly. Sam showed real confidence in her ability and great courage in leaving her goal to help the defence progress the ball.

Leah, a linchpin throughout the league campaign, makes her control of the game look effortless in a way only class can. Along with Alana, she had a massive impact on winning possessions and working tirelessly to support the ball carrier. Saoirse tends to impose her will on games in whatever way the team needs most, and when Emmie cleverly disguised her intention and reversed a pass back to her captain, it underlined that goalscoring is a mentality too — as once again, Saoirse delivered a decisive goal in a big game to go along with an incredible performance!

Goal chances were scarce against Mayobridge’s resolute defence, but Amy worked it through the hands and her perfectly presented pass allowed Eva to instantly snap-shot low into the bottom corner—the goal that ultimately sealed the league title, fitting for the player who opened the team’s account back in April!

The Bryansford girls are too many to mention but everyone close to the squad knows how important everyone’s role is. Both teams played with heart & determination on the day - there’s sure to many more great contests ahead as we can now all look forward to the Championship. Maith thú!!! 💚💛 ‎

We were so impressed with the tackling, determination and work rate from every single player.

A tough morning of football against strong opposition from Dundrum, St John’s and Kilcoo.

The girls showed plenty of skill, determination and team spirit throughout, and all the coaches are so proud of their efforts.
