Newmarket Martial Arts celebrated an extraordinary year of achievement as 48 students travelled to compete at the European K*k Sool Won Korean Martial Arts Championships, an event held at Norwich UEA that attracted more than 500 competitors from across Europe.

Students aged between 4 and 60 years old competed in divisions across a wide range of disciplines, including sparring, traditional forms, self defence and traditional Korean Royal Court weapons. The event showcased the dedication, skill, and determination of competitors of all ages and experience levels, with the Newmarket team placing 3rd in Europe and 5 students receiving the title of Grand Champion.

The tournament success comes during a particularly significant year for Newmarket Martial Arts, which is proudly celebrating its 20th Anniversary. Over the past two decades, the club has built a strong reputation for developing martial artists, promoting confidence, discipline, and respect, while creating a supportive community for students and families alike.

One of the standout moments from the championships was Instructor Nicola Slack who after 20 years of dedication was promoted to Master level of 5th Degree Black Belt. Adding to an already presitgous occasion, the event was Nicola's final tournament appearance earning two gold medals and two silver medals before being awarded overall 4th Degree Black Belt Grand Champion. Instructor Ami Hedgecock was also recognised for her commitment and achievements, receiving promotion to the rank of 3rd Degree Black Belt.

Nicola was not the only Newmarket Martial Arts competitor to achieve Grand Champion status. Maja Bodrogi, Katie Barrett and the mother-and-daughter team of Melinda Hertelendy and Garda Krausz also won Grand Champion in their divisions.

Classes are open to all and there are beginner classes forming now.

At just four years old, many children are still developing basic coordination skills such as hopping, balancing, and following simple movement patterns.

That is why it is especially impressive when a young child is able to memorise and perform 15 martial arts moves involving balance, coordination, kicking, and technique.

Martial arts training at an early age offers much more than physical exercise. It challenges both the body and the mind. Remembering a sequence of movements requires concentration, memory, and discipline. For a four-year-old to successfully learn multiple techniques demonstrates advanced listening skills, strong focus, and excellent motor development for their age.

Balance and coordination are key foundations in martial arts. Young children are naturally energetic, but controlling movements with precision is a very different skill. Kicking techniques, stance transitions, and coordinated movements help improve body awareness and stability. Learning these abilities at such a young age can contribute positively to confidence, posture, agility, and overall physical development.

While every child develops at their own pace, a four-year-old demonstrating the ability to memorise and perform a complex martial arts sequence is certainly noteworthy. It reflects not only natural ability, but also enthusiasm, dedication, and a willingness to learn.

Most importantly, achievements like this should remain enjoyable and encouraging. Keeping training positive and age-appropriate allows children to continue building skills while developing a lifelong love for movement, fitness, and learning.

My mission is not to teach children merely how to fight, but how to avoid conflict, build confidence, and become better individuals within their families and communities.

I take pride in helping students develop strong character, good health, and a positive mindset that contributes to society in meaningful ways.
