HANBURY FC ARE CHAMPIONS OF CWMBRAN 🏆

Confirmation of the final league table for the Powerplay 2023/2024 Cwmbran Tuesday League 📊

Hanbury FC are the Champions (just) on goals scored, after finishing the season level on points & goal difference with Young Guns. After 16 weeks, the whole league title was decided on us scoring two more goals than second place! Incredibly close.

Below are the Hanbury FC end-of-season prize-winners:

▪️GOAL OF THE SEASON
Emyr (Week 15 v Tuesday Ballers)
To score the winner in the last few mins against Tuesday Ballers, right at the business end of the season was a good enough reason to win anyway… but the strike itself was from the very top drawer. A sweet half-volley from the edge of the area that nestled in the top corner.

Worthy winner!

▪️GOLDEN BOOT
Harry - 21 goals
For the second season running, Harry scoops the Golden Boot for scoring 20+ goals in a season. Goal machine ⚽️

Special mention to Christian for his excellent contribution of 17 goals!

▪️PLAYERS’ PLAYER
Jonathon
All good 6-a-side teams need a strong dependable defender, and Jon is one of the very best. He’s also a great guy who gives his all for the team, and was recognised by almost an unanimous decision by his fellow players 🤩

Powerplay (Powerplay South / Powerplay Wales) Cwmbran Tuesday League
Week #16

📆 Tues 20 Feb
⏰ 20:30
🏟️ Cwmbran 3G
⚽️ 3-0 v XL United
(Harry, Christian, Geraint)

With our title rivals Young Guns winning 4-1 v George Weah’s Cousins in the 20:00 kickoff, Hanbury FC knew a three-goal win was enough to win the title (on goals scored, due to how close the title chase has been) 📊

We were made to work incredibly hard for the win tonight. XL had several chances, and the crowd that came to watch were just adding to the tense atmosphere. Our players seemed a little overawed by the occasion, and struggled to maintain any meaningful attacking tempo 💨

However, Hanbury kept themselves in the game with some strong defensive commitment, and managed to score three goals despite the XL goalie having a fantastic game 🧤

A 3-0 win means that Hanbury FC win the league this season! A brilliant achievement for a bunch of fat old men 🤪

Had to have a few drinks back at our sponsors the Terrace Inn 🤩

A quick mention for the Young Guns lads, who came up to us at the end and congratulated us on the league win. What fantastic sportsmanship shown from the young lads, fair play 💪🏿

End-of-season social in Cardiff for the team on Saturday… it may get messy… 🍻

With just one game to go in the league season, here’s how the Powerplay (Powerplay South / Powerplay Wales) Cwmbran Tuesday League table looks…

Last Tuesday’s epic win over Tuesday Ballers, which maintained Hanbury FC’s winning streak stretching back eight games, means Hanbury are top of the table.

The league run-in has been really tense, with the top three teams changing places on a weekly basis. Hanbury FC are currently occupying top spot on goals scored only!

Last game this Tuesday is against XL United. Hanbury FC just need to match or better Young Guns’ result (against George Weah’s Cousins) to win the title.

It’s going to go down to the wire… 📊 🏆

⚽️ Hanbury FC 2-0 Kliq of Kwan Yick
(Christian, Geraint)

A low-scoring, edge game against a solid football team. Hanbury went 1-0 up early on, but didn’t capitalise on this early dominance and Kliq got back into the game well - with a few half-chances and hitting the woodwork.

We were made to work hard for the victory, with our second goal coming before some good chances at the end which should have been buried. Goal difference may be important come the end of the season…

Now though, our attention turns to the small matter of Tuesday Ballers (current league leaders only on goals scored) next week.

Huge game, and - barring the other title contenders Young Guns scoring loads of goals in the next two games - winner probably takes all!

After 13/16 games of the season, here’s how the league table looks…

Hanbury FC sitting pretty at the top, for the first time this season - but only on goal difference.

It’s a three-horse race for the title, which will surely be partly decided in our game v Tuesday Ballers on 13 February. Goal difference may play a part too… so all to play for!

⚽️ Hanbury FC 4-2 Young Guns
(Jonathon 4)

Big game, BIG performance and result from the Hanbury boys which lifts us to the league summit!!

The game couldn’t have started worse for Hanbury, slipping to 2-0 down within the first few minutes and looking out of sorts.

A tactical change however got the team back into the game, and from then on Big Jon had an absolute stormer up front!

Special mention to the “Goal of the Season” - 3-2 up towards the end of the game, Jon gets the ball close to the left touchline deep inside our half, clears the ball left-footed… not realising his shot was on target and the Young Guns GK was out of his box… and the ball trickles in!

Hanbury FC now occupies top spot in the league (on goal difference alone). Three games left, including one against Tuesday Ballers. Three must-win games…

⚽️ Hanbury FC 3-0 Racing Club FC
(Jake, Ethan, Harry)

Another determined performance from the Hanbury lads against a good footballing team.

Very cagey game, as both teams knew dropped points would harm their chances of challenging for the league title this season.

Hanbury’s first goal was a little fortuitous, as Jake’s diagonal cross/shot went all the way in (via a GK fumble), but from that point on the Hanbury boys grew in confidence and hit Racing Club on the break.

The final score maybe flatters Hanbury FC, but the best team won on the night.

Good drink at the Ashbridge Inn Table Table afterwards too (Terrace Inn closed) 😫

Next week is the small matter of playing Young Guns, currently 1st in the league. Big game!

⚽️ Hanbury FC 6-3 Fike FC
(Christian 2, Geraint, Sam, Ethan, Harry)

Another win for Hanbury FC, but we were certainly made to work for it this week. Fike FC were at us from the first whistle, and our lads couldn’t really get going.

The first 15 mins were very even, with Fike probably having more of the possession and chances. Gaffer & GK Tim was busy!

At 2-2 the game started to open up, as both teams chased the third goal. Hanbury managed to score two goals in quick succession, followed by two more towards the end (after Fike had pulled one back).

Overall it was a gutsy performance from Hanbury FC with some great finishing in front of goal, and ultimately a good win against a strong side. Fike’s centre forward in particular played really well, and on another night could have finished with more than a hat-trick.

Only a few games of the season to go now…
