Newport Corinthians U12 Girls

Can’t believe I’ve only just realised I didn’t post an update for our last match of the season!

We traveled to Blackwood, the Corries girls taking their brand new kits for a test run.

It was an entertaining match with both teams finding the back of the net multiple times. The Corries girls played confidently and came away with the thoroughly deserved win, with a score line of 8-3!

Our goalscorers were Aniya x2, Martha x2, Liv x3 and a Blackwood own goal.

Massive congratulations girls, what an end to the 25/26 season!

Wednesday 6th May we travelled to Undy.

The girls were excited to play and raring to go before kick off. They started strong, moving the ball confidently with lots of link up play and lots of shots, resulting in Aniya hitting the back of the net and putting the Corries 1-0 up shortly before half time.

Both teams started the second half strong, with quick attacks and solid defending from both sides. An Undy cross was fired across the Corries box and took an unfortunate bounce off of a Corries defenders knee and into the back of the net. 1-1.

The Corries girls kept their heads and kept pushing forward with lots of attacking play in the minutes that followed and it wasn’t long before Martha scored making the score 2-1.

Sunday 3rd May we hosted our last home game of the season against Undy.

Both teams played well with Undy taking the lead. Corries didn’t lose focus and kept pushing forward, with Olivia bringing the score level just before half time.

The Corries really found their stride in the second half, Olivia using her silky foot work to give Corries the lead. The girls were moving the ball around confidently and defending well, breaking away and moving forward as a team, with Liv scoring another two goals and securing a Corries 4-1 victory!

Wednesday 29th April we hosted Wattsville Sky at Coronation Park.

A thoroughly entertaining match full of goals. Corries found themselves trailing 5-1 at half time with the only Corries goal scored by Aniya.

The Corries girls fought hard in the second half, pulling back 3 more goals by Nana, Martha and Olivia, but despite a great second half performance, Wattsville took the win 6-4.

Sunday 26th April we were hosts to Blackwood Town.

The sun was shining, the girls were eager to play, and it ended with a Corries win!

The girls played fantastically, and although the official score on comet was 8-0 due to the mercy rule, I’m going to list the names for all 10 goals, as each goal was thoroughly deserved!

We only went and did it!! Our first win of the season, and it was so, so deserved!! 💙🤍

We were hosts to Graig Villa Dino Colts, and the Corries girls turned up ready to play!

Corries started strong and with 5 minutes gone Nana hit the back of net putting us 1-0 up.

Corries kept up the pressure straight from the restart, resulting in Isla T scoring and putting Corries 2-0 up.

GVD scored twice bringing the score level at the break.

Corries went into the second half fired up and determined to retake the lead. Passing and moving with confidence, defending well and breaking away to create chance after chance, hitting both the post and the bar, and a fair few marginally going wide or over.

Another break and the ball falls to Lilah who hits it first time straight into the back of the net. 3-2 Corries!

The rest of the match was scrappy with opportunities at both ends, with our goalkeeper IslaMae making some brilliant saves and keeping the Corries lead in tact.

Final whistle goes, Corries WIN! Final score 3-2!

Beyond proud of the girls, they’ve been putting so much work in both on the pitch and in training, and to finally see it paying off and to get that win means more to the team than most realise.

Sunday 12th April saw us host Abertillery Belles at Coronation Park.

In rubbish weather conditions, both teams turned up raring to go. Abertillery started strong and held the same standard throughout the game, scoring 2 in the first half.

Corries kept their heads up despite some blips, but Abertillery ultimately came away with the win after another 4 goals in the second half.

On Thursday 9th April we hosted our first home match in months, along with our first midweek fixture, against Lliswerry Llizards Greens. With Mollie making her debut for the Corries.

Lliswerry took the lead early, scoring in the first few minutes. Corries were strong and confident, moving the ball around well and shooting whenever possible. Willow lofted a huge kick forward from defence, with the bounce beating the Lliswerry keeper and hitting the back of the net, bagging Willow her first ever goal for the Corries!

Corries lost concentration slightly and Lliswerry retook the lead a few minutes before half time.

Corries dominated the second half, defending well and coming close to scoring a few times but not managing to hit the back of the net again. Resulting in Lliswerry taking the 2-1 win.

Congrats girls!

Today we made the trip to Wattsville to play against Wattsville Sky. It was a bitterly cold and wet start to the game, meaning the Corries girls took a little while to warm up.

Wattsville took the lead and soon doubled their advantage to 2-0. Nana’s debut for the team saw her pull one back for the Corries, before Wattsville netted another 2 before half time, leaving us trailing 4-1 at the break.

Wattsville started quick from kick off of the second half, and scored straight away making it 5-1. Now would be where the Corries girls heads would usually drop and the score line would go from bad to worse, but not today!

You could see the difference in the team today, Corries were ready for a battle, and what a battle it was. They worked hard to win every ball, every tackle. They were moving the ball well, breaking down the wings and getting the ball into the box. A tap in on the line from Olivia brought the scoreline to 5-2.

They kept working, kept tackling, kept moving the ball forward. Goal number 2 from Nana, 5-3.

Wattsville still broke and had some good chances, our defence worked hard, with Erin in particular making sure nothing got past her at centre back.

A break, and a confident shot from our Captain Martha hit the back of the net, 5-4. The atmosphere changed, the Corries believed in themselves, and in each other, they knew they could push harder and bring this level.

Some strong defending kept out Wattsville pressure, leading to another Corries goal, Nana’s third, to bring the score level at 5-5 with 3 mins to go!

Corries kept the pressure on, winning corner after corner, with the last cross resulting in some chaos in the box and a Wattsville hand ball. Penalty to Corries in the dying seconds of the match!

Martha bravely stepped up to take the Corries fist ever penalty since starting competitive football, leading to a save from Wattsville’s goalkeeper and the final whistle blowing seconds later.

What. A. Game! I genuinely could not be any prouder of these girls, to end with a draw after being 5-1 down is such an achievement and they should all be so proud of themselves!
