Ashgrove Rovers 2-2 Finn Harps

Shea Donegan ⚽️⚽️

A brilliant result for this young Ashgrove team against a very experienced and very fancied Finn Harps side. Finn Harps settled into the game a lot quicker than the lads and took the lead in the 20th minute. Heads normally drop with a young group but these boys stood up and set the Harps on the back foot finally getting their reward on the 43rd minute with a flick on by McCabe into the path of Donegan who burst through the middle and slotted past the keeper to make it 1-1 heading into the half time break. Second half was very open and saw both teams create some very good chances to take the lead. The Harps thought they had taken 3 points late on when Stephen Daly slotted home to make it 2-1. However this young side didn’t stop and kept pushing to the end and got there rewards when a ball by Ciaran Little found Donegan who took it past the keeper and calmly finished into the net to secure a well deserved point on the board.

Gary ‘Cookie’ McLoughlin Memorial Cup

Ashgrove Rovers 4-4 Ashgrove Select (Ashgrove Rovers win 5-4 on pens)

On Sunday past saw the club host the Gary McLoughlin memorial match at Newry City 4G Pitch. This year Gary’s family decided the charity we would raise funds for was The Road Ahead NI charity. The final total raised from Sunday’s game will be published shortly.

On a sun drenched day at the Showgrounds back pitch we saw a high quality match which produced eight goals in normal time followed by the dreaded penalty shootout to see who would take the bragging rights.

With the Select side having seen a penalty saved by Ally Bann it fell down to Stephen O’Connor to convert and he duly obliged to see the Rovers side retain the cup on the day.

After the game Gary’s mummy thanked both teams and spectators for coming down to honour Gary’s memory and it was great to see young and old faces playing on the day.

Thanks to all the players and management of both sides who kindly gave up their time to play on Sunday it was very much appreciated

McCoys Bar was the venue after the game for food and refreshments followed by the presentation. Gary’s son Matthew presented Select side goalkeeper Jamie Carlisle for his outstanding performance on the day with his Man of the Match voucher which for the second year has been kindly sponsored by Louis Boyd’s.

This was followed by the presentation of the trophy of the cup to Rovers captain Kieran O’Brien and then medals for the players.

After the presentation senior manager Damien informed everybody that the club has Cookie 11 stitched into the back of the jersey as a way to remember Gary and to show that his memory will always live on with his beloved Ashgrove Rovers

Lastly I would like to thank McCoys Bar for hosting the two teams and providing the food, Newry City AFC for usage of the pitch, Louis Boyds for the Man of the Match Voucher, O’Reillys Wholesale for sponsoring the water for the game along with some half time snacks and finally to club coach Keith Doherty for kindly volunteering his time to referee the game.
