We are pleased to announce that On Saturday 9th May 2026 we will be hosting Iain Abernethy for a seminar, 11:00 - 15:00 Details below.

“The theme for the seminar will be the more advanced methods found in the Pinan / Heian series. We will cover the trapping, gripping, locking and takedowns that are often overlooked in much of today’s karate practise. The seminar is open to all grades and styles.”

Venue is, Newton Aycliffe Karate Club.

Not all martial arts clubs are built the same…

Our instructors give up their time freely - not because they’re paid to be there, but because they care.

We've had a busy couple of weeks at the dojo! Great commitment for a cold wet February.

Adult lessons have been diverse, with varied warmups, fast-paced technical work, impact pad work, a range of combinations, varied drills, sparring & footwork.

Upper grades have been getting down and dirty with some clinch fighting, kihon revision, and a few of Iain Abernethy's Motobu drills thrown into the mix too.

And if that wasn't enough, we have had time for loads of kata too.

For the junior grades? Well we've had the first gradings of the season, four have moved up the ranks, with more to follow...

Phew. Well done for everyone 💪

A big happy birthday to our illustrious leader Ryan! 🎉🎂

In the old days of NAKC it was traditional to give the bumps on birthdays, but Ryan is such a unit we've opted not to for health and safety reasons.

So instead here's a couple of pics of Sensai Iain Abernethy giving him a few whacks in Germany, which we hope you'll agree is just as satisfying!

We enjoyed a lovely adult lesson last night. For warm up, Sensai Martin took us through some quick paced line work. We then separated into five groups, each led by a Dan grade. Sensai Scott took one for the team by floating between us, and often acting as a wonderful Uke to be hit and thrown to the floor repeatedly (team player!).

We mostly focussed on grading requirements, with each instructor going through kata, looking at core themes, and teaching bunkai for each section.

Bunkai is the 'analysis' and breaking down the true meaning of Kata. As a Practical Karate club, we are focussed on realistic applications in everything we do. This is what sets us apart from more sports-based clubs and organisations.

Some groups found time to squeeze in some pad work, and a couple of basic drills too. Everyone worked hard.

We are already looking forward to tomorrow's lesson!
