I’ve been thinking recently about how I actually work with people 1:1.
My training taught me a lot about choosing practices for particular things someone might be experiencing.
Someone is struggling with anxiety or insomnia for example, and there may be a breathing practice, movement or meditation that could be useful. I have that knowledge, and it absolutely informs the way I work.
But over the last few years, I’ve realised that I rarely want to begin with a plan for what someone needs.
I’d rather begin with the person.
What’s happening for you today?
What are you noticing?
What feels difficult?
What’s here that perhaps you’ve been trying to change, understand, get past or make go away?
And then we see what happens.
Sometimes we talk. Sometimes we move. Sometimes we use breathwork, grounding, meditation, mantra, somatic enquiry or a yoga practice. Sometimes we lie on the floor and notice what happens. Sometimes what we planned to explore turns out not to be what needs our attention at all.
All of my training and experience comes into the room with me.
But so do you.
And increasingly, I think that’s one of the most important things about the way I work.
I don’t need to know what should happen before we begin.
We can start with what’s here.
