“What lifts should you avoid as an older lifter?”
None.
The problem isn’t the exercise. It’s how you approach it.
Deadlifts aren’t dangerous.
Squats aren’t bad for your knees.
Overhead pressing won’t wreck your shoulders.
Poor technique, too much load, and rushing the process? That’s what causes issues.
Over 40, training isn’t about avoiding movements…it’s about earning them.
Learn good form, build gradually, respect recovery and train consistently.
Every lift can be safe.
Every lift can be effective.
If it’s appropriate for YOU, and you do it well, it belongs in your programme.
Avoid bad form. Not the movements. 💪
Andrew Finlay Strength Training
Personal Training focused on safe, sustainable strength training for everybody.
Longevity isn’t about chasing extremes.
It doesn't have to be about being the strongest person in the gym or the fittest person in your age group.
It’s about being stronger, fitter and more mobile than you were last year.
Over 40, training shifts. The goal becomes resilience, independence, capability.
Can you:
- Get off the floor without thinking about it?
- Move well without constant aches and niggles?
- Carry your shopping with ease?
That’s the win.
Small improvements.
Stacked consistently.
Year after year.
Get stronger.
Get fitter.
Get more mobile.
That’s how you train for the long game. 💪

Strength training over 40 doesn’t have to be complicated.
You don’t need 12 exercises, fancy equipment, or workouts that look like a circus act.
Squat.
Hinge.
Push.
Pull.
These are our fundamental movements as humans.
Find versions that suit you. Do them well. Do them consistently. Add a little weight over time.
Simple? Yes.
Easy? No.
Progress still takes effort. It takes patience. It takes turning up on the days you’d rather not. It takes choosing good technique over ego.
But complicated isn’t the same as effective.
If you’re over 40, the goal isn’t to annihilate yourself. It’s to build strength you can rely on - strong legs, a resilient back, shoulders that move well, and the confidence that comes from knowing your body can handle life.
Keep it simple.
Work hard.
Stay consistent.
That’s where the real results are. 💪

Building strength without pain and intimidation.
Some people respond well to being screamed at.
Most of us don’t.
And for beginners, or anyone coming back after a break, that kind of coaching can do more harm than good.
Coaching should empower you, not overwhelm you.
My approach is simple: build your confidence by helping you understand the lifts, your body, and the “why” behind what we do.
When you know what you’re doing, you can train with clarity & calmness, and make real progress. Let’s build that foundation.

Feeling stressed? Move your body.
Exercise is one of the most powerful stress-relievers we’ve got - it clears your head, boosts your mood, and gives you space to breathe.
A quick lift, a walk, a class… whatever you enjoy, it all helps.
Your mind will thank you for it.

Consistency beats intensity. Every. Single. Time.
Across nearly 20 years of training, so much has changed - the gyms I’ve trained in, the goals I’ve chased, even the colour of my hair 😅
But one thing hasn’t changed: I’ve shown up 3-4 times a week.
On the good days.
On the stressful days.
On the can’t-be-bothered days.
That routine has built habits that will last a lifetime.
You don’t need to train perfectly, you'll have days where everything feels light and days where you just can't get moving and that's fine - you just need to keep showing up. Future you will thank you for it. 💪

Too many people give up on working out and making lifestyle changes too soon. Either they don't see any immediate changes, or, the ‘beginner gains’ they get slow or stall and they decide it's not worth the effort.
We need to shift that mindset. Instead of thinking in terms of days and weeks, think months and years.
Lifestyle changes pay off over a lifetime. Focus on changing habits and making them a part of your routine. This is where the big results really come from.
No shouting, no intimidation - just coaching that meets you where you are and builds from there.
After years in the fitness industry, I've developed a coaching style that is intentionally calm, supportive, and focused on building your confidence from the ground up.
Why? Because I know what it's like to struggle.
I wasn't a naturally gifted athlete. I remember the frustration of trying to learn new movements, and that experience taught me the true value of patience and a solid system.
That's why my approach isn't about shouting; it's about understanding and empowering. Especially for those of us over 40, fitness should be about feeling better and stronger, not intimidated.
Whether you're an absolute beginner ready to start your first strength program, or a high-level competitive athlete looking to refine your technique, my systematic style works. It's built on a foundation of empathy and proven methods, designed to help you master every movement we train.

You don’t need to be fit to start - you just need to start 💪
I hear a lot of people say they'll wait until they “feel fitter” or “lose a bit of weight” before they step into the gym.
Strength, fitness, confidence - these are all things you build THROUGH starting, not BEFORE starting.
No matter your age, shape, or experience, there’s a version of training that works for you and I want to help you find it. Start small, move consistently, and you’ll be amazed where it takes you.
You don’t have to be ready - you just have to begin.
