We love hearing how horses get on during their stays with us, and this was such a lovely Facebook review to receive from Logan. 💙

“Highly recommend. I’ve just picked my horse up from her three-day stay where she had water treadmill and salt chamber sessions. I often come for the gallops, which are always really well kept and provide a way to keep fitness up in the eventing season when the ground is hard.

“Amy and Tom were really helpful and made the experience very easy. They made me feel at ease as it was her first time ever on the water treadmill and it was lovely to get updates of her doing so well. I also feel like the salt chamber has made a real difference after her suffering with sinusitis. Thank you!”

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a lovely review and it was a pleasure having your horse to stay. We're delighted you both had such a positive experience with us!

If you’ve visited Thorpe Farm recently, we’d love to hear how you and your horse got on too.

🐎 Meet the Thorpe Farm Racing Club horses!

First up is As The Lad Says, better known at home as Ernie, and we know this guy has a lot of fans out there….

He’s an eight-year-old Irish bay gelding by Sandmason out of an Arcadio mare, and he’s a classy horse with a great jump. Ernie gave the Racing Club a brilliant day out when winning at Haydon point to point, and we’re really looking forward to seeing how he’s trained on and what the new season might have in store for him.

And if you fancy being part of Ernie’s journey this season, there’s still time to join the Thorpe Farm Racing Club! 🏇 It’s all about bringing together people who love their racing and enjoy the social side of the sport too – with racedays, yard visits, picnics at the races, our Racing Club WhatsApp group and the chance to follow Ernie and the rest of the team throughout the season.

Membership is £100 + VAT per month from September to May, and you don’t need any previous ownership experience – just an enthusiasm for racing and a willingness to join in the fun!

We’ll be introducing you to more of our Racing Club horses over the coming weeks, so stay tuned to meet the rest of the team! 🐎

💦🐴 What actually happens during a water treadmill session?

It’s one of the questions we’re often asked, especially by owners thinking about bringing their horse to Thorpe Farm for the first time.

So, what can you expect?

Your horse walks calmly onto the treadmill before the belt starts moving and they begin walking at a comfortable pace.

💧 The water is then introduced gradually, with the level adjusted depending on the individual horse and what we’re looking to achieve from the session.

🐴 Then it’s time to work. Walking through water creates resistance, encouraging the horse to work differently to normal walking exercise while keeping the work controlled and low impact.

⏱️ Every session is tailored to the horse. The amount of water, speed and length of time working will depend on the individual, their current workload and whether they’re here for fitness, strengthening, recovery or rehabilitation.

Once the working part of the session is complete, the water drains away and your horse finishes before calmly walking back off the treadmill.

And that’s it! No two horses are exactly the same, which is why we adjust what we do to suit the horse standing in front of us.

Never used a water treadmill before? Drop your questions below and Amy will answer them. 👇

Have you been told your horse would benefit from working without the weight of a rider? 🐴

There are plenty of ways to do it, such as in-hand exercises and long-reining, but the water treadmill can be another fantastic tool to add to the mix.

One of the big advantages is that your horse works in straight lines, without the repeated circles involved in some forms of groundwork. Plus, the water provides resistance while supporting low-impact exercise, encouraging the horse to work through their body without a rider on board.

Sessions can help with cardiovascular fitness, topline development, range of movement and stride length, with the programme tailored to the individual horse.

If your horse has been advised to work without a rider and you’d like to find out whether the water treadmill could be suitable for them, get in touch now! 💦

‘Tis the season… for the pointers to come back into work! 🏇

You know that autumn is here when the Racing Club horses come in from their holidays and start their hacking, roadwork and water treadmill sessions.

It’s the first stage of their fitness programme that will eventually see them cantering and galloping and enjoying schooling sessions over fences!

🐴 Ask Amy: My horse is fit, but they need to get stronger. What can I do?

Amy’s answer: That’s a great question because fitness is only part of the picture! Good muscle tone and strength are really important for helping your horse do their job well and reducing the risk of injury, so I’d look at adding a few different things into their routine:

⛰️ Hill work, which is brilliant for getting that engine working and building strength behind.

💦 Water treadmill, because the water adds resistance while encouraging the horse to work through their body. It boosts topline and is gentle on joints and feet!

🐴 Pole work is a really useful way to encourage them to engage their core and topline.

💨 Transitions, and lots of them! They’re great for getting the hindleg and engine really working and doing them on the gallops will get you lots of bang for your buck. A forward-going horse, no endless circles in the school.

🌱 Nutrition – finally, I’d look at what they’re eating and make sure their diet is giving them everything they need to support the work you’re asking them to do.

My biggest tip to finish is - variety! Building strength and muscle takes time, so mix things up and give those muscles plenty of different ways to work.

🍂 Summer fit doesn’t automatically mean autumn ready.

Your horse might have felt at their absolute peak through June, July and August, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the same fitness programme is right for them heading into autumn.

At this point in the year, it’s worth taking stock.

Has their workload changed? Are they coming towards the end of a busy competition season? Are they preparing for hunting, autumn events or a different job altogether? Has the change in ground affected where and how you can work them? And, importantly, how are they actually feeling?

Fitness isn’t something we achieve once and then simply maintain in exactly the same way all year round.

As the seasons change, a good fitness programme should change too.

At Thorpe Farm, we’re big believers in looking at the individual horse and what they need now. That might mean controlled work on the water treadmill, introducing or changing gallop work, varying the intensity of sessions or, for some horses, actually backing off and giving them a little more recovery.

The aim isn’t always to make them fitter. It’s to make sure they’re fit for the job you’re asking them to do next.

🍂 So, is your horse autumn ready? Or are you still following their summer fitness plan?

If you’re not sure what the next stage of your horse’s fitness work should look like, have a chat with Amy and the team at Thorpe Farm. 🐴

Support your horse’s health this autumn with the salt chamber!

Autumn is just around the corner and for lots of horses it will mean more time in the stable, rugs going back on and plenty of changeable weather! It’s a great time to give your horse a little extra support with a session or two in our salt chamber.

🐴 More time stabled can mean greater exposure to dust from bedding and forage, so supporting respiratory health becomes especially important.

🌧️ Warm weather one day, wet and muddy the next… autumn can be hard on coats and skin. Salt therapy can help support skin health as we head into rugging season and muddier conditions.

💦 And on those warmer autumn days, horses can still get hot and sweaty under their numnahs and rugs, adding another challenge for the skin.

Our salt chamber is a non-invasive and drug-free way to support both respiratory and skin health as the seasons change. If you'd like to book your horse in or find out a little more about how salt therapy works, just drop us a message!

🐴 LIVERY SPACES AVAILABLE AT THORPE FARM 🐴

It’s always bittersweet when livery spaces become available, and this time particularly so. Due to illness and horses moving on to new homes, we currently have a number of opportunities available at Thorpe Farm – and while we’re very sad to see familiar faces leave, we’d love to welcome some new ones to the yard. 💚

One of the things we’re most proud of at Thorpe Farm is the friendly, supportive environment we offer. Whether you’re completely independent or would value experienced help and advice when you need it, Amy, Tommy and the team are always on hand.

We currently have DIY, Assisted DIY and Full Livery options available, with spaces that would particularly suit someone with two horses or ponies.

We also have a private barn block becoming available, offering sole use of:

🐴 Three stables
🌿 Your own paddock with all-year-round turnout
🏡 Your own shed
💧 Automatic water drinkers

Whichever option suits you, you’ll be based on a friendly, professional yard with access to Thorpe Farm’s fantastic facilities*, including:

✔️ Large individual turnout paddocks
✔️ Horse walker
✔️ Excellent hacking
✔️ All-weather gallops
✔️ Water treadmill
✔️ Cross-country schooling field
✔️ Salt therapy chamber

Thorpe Farm is much more than somewhere to keep your horse. We want our liveries to feel supported, whether that means an extra pair of hands when life gets busy, experienced advice when you need it, or simply being part of a welcoming yard where people look out for one another.

If you’re looking for a new base for one, two or even three horses, we’d love to hear from you.

📞 To find out more or arrange a visit, message Amy or call 07817 720449.

*Facilities must be booked in advance.
