Final of Dale Stratford Trophy
Orlingbury Dons 1-2 Upton Fc
Friday night finally saw Upton Football Club get their hands on a cup. In our 4 year existence we have finished top of the championship twice, beaten finalists in the prem plate as well as 2 defeats in championship cup semi finals.
Achievements that are made more impressive by the turnover of players for different reasons each time we finish a championship season.
In the semi final we took a while to find any fluency, this time round we started a little better.
We took the lead when Cian burst past the full back and ran through into a 50/50 with the keeper which rebounded off of him and into the net. This sparked Dons into life and to their credit they took the game to us. After hitting the woodwork twice and forcing Ollie into some great saves, they were finally rewarded when the forward was slipped through and poked the ball past the keeper and in. We created one more chance to lead at the break when Joel was played in from the angle but the Don's keeper spread himself well and saved. HT 1-1.
Few choice words at HT about how much space was being given away and we started the second half much better.
Not much in terms of clear chances at either end until the last 20 mins.
As Joel tried to get a cross into the box, Sasha was thrown to the floor in the box. Ref points to the spot. A great spot from the ref, unfortunately no one saw the keeper 3 yds off his line as Jake has his penalty saved. Great save buy with a long and ref looking at it would expect it spotted. Lads could have put their heads down and felt it wasn't to be but responded to it superbly. After changing some tired legs, it was a throw into the box which was allowed to bounce before Ahmed (loves scoring at Sileby) swivelled and put it in the far corner.
Joyous scenes at the final whistle marred by a few handbags but at last a victory to cherish. Dale was a teammate of the Upton manager for many years so to have our name on his Trophy means the world.
Fantastic effort by the lads especially the ground covered by the midfield 3, with Bien claiming Motm Trophy, Dante running himself into the ground and Sasha playing 90 mins despite then going to hospital with food poisoning.
Orlingbury Dons are a superb team who I am sure will win plenty of trophies in the future (especially when going into opposition changing rooms and taking photos of tactics boards 🧐).
Next up is a trip to Pattishall to face Sixfields Rangers FC in the plate semi final on weds night.

DST Semi final
Weds night saw us face Kingsthorpe Athletic for a place in the final.
In typical Upton fashion we had a 14 man squad but ready for the battle. On paper we went into the semi's as the highest ranked team left, however these watching the first half would have found it very hard to believe. Credit to KA, they were first to every ball and spent a lot of the first 40 mins on the front foot. They took the lead after we gave away a needless corner. Ball was nodded back across goal and headed in from close range. Was a real hard watch and frustration was clear from the lads, shooting from ridiculous distance and misplaced crosses were all we could muster. 2 mins before half time we played our only bit of football and it paid dividends. Bien with great progress down the right and squared for Cian to smash home.
Half time 1-1. Fair to say I didn't hold back at HT and reiterated expectations for the second half. Second 45 was much improved, we had more of the ball and started winning more first and second balls. It was becoming clear that neither team wanted to risk too much. KA had a well.worked move well saved by Ollie and also hit the post from a corner when Kizza thought it wasn't going anywhere near goal....
Cian shot wildly when finding himself bearing down on goal midway through half and we struck the bar through Lewis overhead kick with 10mins to go.
Ultimately it came down to spot kicks and us needing someone to step up. Ollie Conopo grining ear to ear was confident having already saved 5 this season.
Upton scored all 4 through Jake, Kizza, Lewis and Cian. Ollie would save the 1st and 4th efforts and would see us into the final to face Orlinbury Dons.
Great battle from KA and am sure we will see them again in the near future. Improvement needed in the final but have put ourselves in the frame at least. Thank you to everyone that came out to support us.
Sunday we head to Grendon Sapphires in our final league game.

Fc Teq 2-1 Upton FC
If a single game summed up our season, this was it. Knew what we were up against. Another Top v bottom clash for us and the lads couldn't of worked any harder. First 20 mins was keeping our shape and limiting Teq to as little as we could. Deadline was broken by a great strike by the right winger with little backlift from edge of the area. With our semi final in midweek, decision was made to rotate players to conserve legs. This worked a treat with being able to apply pressure and we started to play some good stuff.
Had already had a strike straight at keeper before Hixxy hit the bar with a header from 12 yds.
35 mins in and big decision pulled out of again. Ball into channel found keeper coming out of area to beat Lewis to the ball, awkward bounce and out came the arm. Ref described it as a natural position, then at half time declared if he had given it he would have had to send keeper off and didn't want to ruin game. Amount of decisions like this over the season certainly haven't evened themselves out for us.
2 mins later we were level, ball controlled by Greg on the halfway line and a shimmy later he was beating down on the keeper. 1-1 HT.
Determined not to sit back and hold on we wanted to push on and give Teq something to think about. After Joel got a volley wrong out of the sky when well placed we had a great chance.
A d**k from Greg over the defence found Dane bearing down on goal, not to be our day and ball goes over the bar after keeper going wrong way.
Teq then started putting us under some pressure looking for a winner. Lack of concentration and great individual play from the winger again found him slotting in a winner with 8 mins to go. In truth I feel the earlier miss had taken the wind out of our sails. Hard to take when we look at the table and have lost to late goals against the top 3 teams but we live and learn from these experiences. We go again on weds night at Wellingborough Town against Kingsthorpe Athletic. Same performance and energy required.
